Das Sanahin-Kloster ist ein armenisches Kloster, das im 10. Jahrhundert in der armenischen Provinz Lori gegründet wurde. Der Name Sanahin bedeutet wörtlich aus dem Armenischen: "Dieser ist älter als dieser", was vermutlich einen Anspruch auf ein älteres Kloster als das benachbarte Haghpat-Kloster darstellt. Die beiden Dörfer und ihre Klöster sind in vielerlei Hinsicht ähnlich und liegen auf einer zergliederten Plateau-Formation, die durch einen tiefen "Riss" getrennt ist, der durch einen kleinen Fluss gebildet wird, der in den Fluss Debed fließt.

Das Kloster wurde vermutlich 976 von Königin Khosrovanuysh, der Frau des Bagratid-Königs Ashot III. Gegründet. Das nahe gelegene Kloster in Sanahin wurde etwa zur gleichen Zeit errichtet. Der Standort des Haghpat-Klosters wurde so gewählt, dass es den Debed-Fluss in der Region Lori im Norden Armeniens überblickt. Es wurde nicht auf einem Gipfel errichtet, sondern auf halber Höhe eines Hügels an einem Ort, der ausgewählt wurde, um Schutz und Verbergung vor neugierigen Blicken und auch als Reaktion auf eine Art klösterliche Demut zu bieten. Es ist auf einem grünen Vorgebirge gebaut, das sich in der Mitte eines Bergkammes befindet, der oft von Wolken gekrönt wird. Ein Gipfel auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite des Flusses ist über 2.500 Meter hoch.

The organizer was responsive; the driver was great; the scenery stunning--highly recommend this tour service.
After some changes to my itinerary, I wound up reserving a car with a driver somewhat last-minute: I couldn't have been happier with the quick communications by the organizers; with the driver, who was delightful; and with the overall experience. The driver to Haghpat and its surroundings from Yerevan is long--but stunning. The monasteries are great. Highly recommend this.

If you are visiting Armenia, Sergey's tour is a must-do. The locations were very beautiful and featured a number of sites that were both aesthetically pleasing and had significant history. He also went above and beyond and took us to Zarni Parni upon our request, despite it not officially being part of the tour. Apart from the locations, the service was excellent. The vehicle was very comfortable and the driving was remarkably smooth (most importantly, there was air conditioning!) There were also amenities such as water provided free of charge which demonstrates the thoughtfulness of our guide. I highly recommend for anyone interesting in seeing stunning landscapes and constructions in great comfort to take this tour!
