We loved our visit to the village of Baku to learn about the art of block printing. It was really fascinating and the added bonus was going into the e school.
What a fantastic day visiting the community of block carvers and printers in Bagru. Our guide, and the artist who accompanied us on our tour of the village, were thorough in their description of the process, visiting many sites around the village where different stages in the process were taking place. We were particular lucky that there were only two of us on the tour, so able at all times to get very close to the action.
I had been looking forward to this tour, the main reason for our visiting India. Unfortunately it was all a bit perfunctory and disappointing. This was by far the most expensive experience we booked in India and the least engaging. Perhaps I had romantic notions of what an artisan community would feel like.
arpit was an excellent guide and obviously trusted by the village artisans. the block printing experience was fantastic.
It was a fascinating tour and Arpit was a wonderful guide. He explained everything so clearly and interestingly, with just the right amount of information. We enjoyed learning about all the different processes and stages, and having a go at block printing ourselves was great fun!
The half-day trip out to Bagru Village was well worth it to discover the inspiring block printing lineage that has been established there. Bagru is a small village, fairly quiet with a charming school we were able to visit. Serendipity was present from the moment we arrived. The artisan that met us had a huge smile on his face. He asked to see the stamp on the dupatta (scarf) I had bought in the United States and happened to be wearing. Grinning from ear to ear, he said "I made your scarf." The stamp read "hand block printed in Bagru, India." Amazing! Passed through generations, the skills and techniques and artfulness needed to block print become second nature to the artisans in Bagru. My guide Arpit toured me around the village and through each step in the process of creation. As a designer myself, it was a pleasure to discover, and even create and take home my own block print. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys creative expression or has an interest in arts and crafts. Thank you Arpit for the great tour!
Wonderful morning learning about the process of traditional block printing: we visited the workshops of the woodcarvers who make the intricate blocks and then walked to the workshops of one of the printers. Here we saw the different stages of mud printing and block printing and learned how the dyes are extracted from natural sources. Then we had an go ourselves guided by the craftspeople. I attended this tour with my daughter and 7 year old grand daughter. Pick up and drop off from our hotel, safe driver. Excellent guide and assistance from a local artist. Extremely interesting and informative tour in a welcoming village. We all loved getting a chance to carry out some blockprinting to bring home a souvenir of our experience. As a bonus, we visited a local school. It was an honour to also meet an award winning artisan. Highly recommend the tour and getting the pick up & drop off option.
The discovery of all the process of creating these sumptuous patterned fabrics was really interesting and captivating. Thank you for this wonderful experience!
