Know before you go
Short, straight answers to the questions every Montego Bay visitor asks before booking.
The sweet-spot months
December to April brings warm, sunny, dry weather — the prime time to visit Montego Bay, though it is also the busiest and priciest.
Peak season (Dec–Apr)
Warm, dry and sunny with low humidity, perfect for the beaches and tours; book well ahead as resorts and tours fill up.
Shoulder (May–Jun)
Still warm and sunny with fewer crowds and better deals, with only occasional showers — great value.
Hurricane season (Aug–Nov)
Hotter and more humid with a risk of tropical storms, especially September–October; prices are lowest and it is greenest.
Reggae & events
Reggae Sumfest in July is Jamaica’s biggest music festival — lively but busy, so plan ahead.
Time of day
Book the Luminous Lagoon for after dark, and catamaran cruises for the afternoon to catch the Rick’s Cafe sunset.
One day
A catamaran cruise or a combo adventure tour.
Two days
Add Dunn’s River Falls and the Blue Hole.
Three days

Tour transfers
Most tours to Ocho Rios, Negril and the Luminous Lagoon include hotel pickup — the easiest way to get around.
Private transfers
Pre-booked private transfers and taxis are the safest way between the airport, resorts and Negril or Ocho Rios.
Resort shuttles
Many all-inclusive resorts offer shuttles and can arrange tours and transfers for you.
Licensed taxis
Use licensed red-plate (PPV) taxis or app-based rides; agree the fare before setting off, as many are unmetered.
The Hip Strip
Montego Bay’s Hip Strip (Gloucester Avenue) with its bars, shops and Doctor’s Cave Beach is walkable.
From the airport
Sangster International Airport is just minutes from the Hip Strip and resorts; the Club Mobay lounge speeds up arrival and departure.
Money & currency
Jamaica uses the Jamaican dollar, but US dollars are widely accepted; carry small bills for tips, and cards work at hotels and bigger venues.
Book pickup tours
Choose tours with hotel pickup, as sights like Dunn’s River Falls and Negril are spread along the coast.
Reef-safe sun care
Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and water shoes for the falls and rocky river beds.
See the lagoon after dark
The Luminous Lagoon only glows at night — book an evening tour for the full effect.
Stay tour-safe
Book reputable tours and licensed transport, and keep valuables secure on the beach.
