Rainbow Mountain from Cusco: High-Altitude Day Trips
The candy-striped ridge of Vinicunca and the turquoise glacial pool of Humantay are the region's most photographed day trips — but both sit far higher than Cusco, so they demand a few days of acclimatization first. Here is how to plan a Rainbow Mountain or high-altitude lake day from Cusco, with the best-rated tours to book.

Vinicunca, the classic Rainbow Mountain
The mineral-striped slopes of Vinicunca top out at about 5,036 m, reached by a roughly 3-hour drive from Cusco and a 90-minute uphill hike from the trailhead. Pickups start brutally early, around 4am, to beat the crowds and the afternoon clouds. Dress in layers, carry water and coca leaves, and never attempt it on your first days in the Andes — acclimatize in Cusco for two to three days first.
Palccoyo, the easier alternative
If a steep climb above 5,000 m sounds daunting, Palccoyo is the smart alternative. It offers three rainbow-coloured ridges and a stone forest with a short, nearly flat walk of 30–45 minutes, far fewer crowds and a slightly lower top. It is the better choice for families, anyone short on acclimatization, or travellers who want the colours without the punishing hike.
Humantay Lake, glacial turquoise
For a different kind of high-altitude day, Humantay Lake glows an unreal turquoise at 4,200 m beneath the Salkantay glacier. The trail from Soraypampa is short but steep, climbing for about an hour to the shore. Like Rainbow Mountain, tours leave Cusco before dawn and include breakfast and lunch. Book any of these a day ahead, and choose a smaller group for a calmer pace on the climb.
