Velkommen til Rajarata! (The King's County eller Kongernes Land) Vi vil starte vores dag fra Vessagiriya Forest Monastery, som er en af de to ældste buddhistiske munke, der bor på øen. På Vessagiriya, vil gæsterne begynde at dykke dybt ind i den gamle Sinhalese civilisation fodret med buddhisme, landbrug, kunst, arkitektur, handelsvirksomhed, internationale relationer, og Spellbinding Engineering Mirvels og der får du en idé om, hvordan Anuradhapura så ud i sin gyldne æra fra begyndelsen.
Skjult på siden af en stenflade ved Ran Masu Uyana (The Royal Goldfish Park) sandwichet mellem Tissa Wewa og Isurumuniya Rock Temple i Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka er en unik artefakt af oldtidens Sri Lanka, der er kendt lokalt som "Bawa Chakraya" eller "Sakwala Chakraya.
Sri Maha Bodhi træet eller den hellige Bodhi træ (en fig eller pipal træ videnskabeligt kendt som Ficus Religiosa) betragtes som den første af de otte hellige steder i Anuradhapura. Dette er optegnet som den højre vinge gren af Sri Maha Bodhi Tree i Bodh Gaya i Indien, under hvilken den ascetiske Siddhartha opnåede oplysning, og blev sendt af kejser Ashoka gennem sin elskede datter, den buddhistiske nunne Theri Sanghamitta, på anmodning af Sinhalese konge Devanampiyatissa i det 3. århundrede f.Kr. Fra dette punkt kom det til at blive ærede af på hinanden følgende konger, munker, nonner og legebuddhister, da det er en levende forbindelse til Gautama Buddha. Især er det almindeligt accepteret, at det ville være det ældste menneskeskabte levende træ i verden med de længste skriftlige optegnelser og i øjeblikket næsten 2300 år gammel.
Til nord eller det hellige Bodhi træ, kan vi være vidne til en enorm samling af stående granit søjler, der er blevet identificeret som den forfaldne bygning af det gamle Brazen palads, der engang tjente som det administrative center for den gamle Maha Vihara kloster kompleks bygget under vejledning af den store kong Gamini Abhaya i 2. århundrede f.Kr., en søn af kong Devanampiyatissa. Det var en ni-etagers bygning med 1000 forskellige kamre. Navnet, Brazen Palce stammer fra det faktum, at dets tag var plettet med kobber fliser.
Ruwanveliseya stupa også kendt som Ratnamali eller som Mahathupa (th Great Stupa) blev bygget under vejledning af Great Kind Gamini Abhaya i det andet århundrede f.Kr. Kronikerne fantastisk beskriver indvielsen af denne Stupa som en stor festival, der blev afholdt i Anuradhapura med deltagelse af inviterede gæster selv fra andre lande som diplomater. Men det blev ødelagt under Chola invasion af det 10. århundrede AC og blev genoprettet stupa til sin oprindelige herlighed i det 12. århundrede AC af kong Parakkramabahu den største. Så i hvert fald hvad vi ser i dag er den nyeste restaurerede form, som blev afsluttet af Ratnamali Stupa Development Society i 1940, hvad der først blev initieret af Ven. Naranvita Sumanasara Thero i 1873 som han ønskede at genoprette det til sin tidligere herlighed.
Dette maleriske par af damme bygget på den lave jord er utvivlsomt udsøgte eksempler på landskabsarkitektur og selvfølgelig et vidunderligt hydraulisk system, der viser ikke kun talentet, men den æstetiske sans for disse storslåede mennesker.
Dette er virkelig noget som et moderne dampbad, men dette var ikke kun for at nyde dampbad med varmt vand, men af en veludviklet sinhalese medicin, der udførte i 4. århundrede AC og videre. Der kan vi diskutere, hvordan det fungerede, og hvordan syge munker i Abhayagiriya University helbredte deres huddød.
Der vil vi igen se en stor granittank i form af kano stativer med en fantastisk intaglio i refektorium lokaler af Abhayagiriya kloster. Den kinesiske munk Fa-hsien, der studerede ved Abhayagiriya Universitet i det 5. århundrede f.Kr., optegnede, at der var 5000 buddhistiske munker i klosteret, og denne særlige koge kunne holde nok ris til et sådant antal.
Dette er et af de fineste kunstværker i Sri Lanka dateres tilbage til omkring det 8. århundrede AC. Og dette mesterværk viser værdifuldt den æstetiske sans hos de gamle håndværkere og hvor utroligt de har sat deres viden, evne, talenter, følelser i praksis.
Dette er populært kendt som Eth-Pokuna til lokalbefolkningen eller elefant pond på engelsk, beliggende sydvest for Refectory er måske den største menneskeskabte pond i Asien, der blev bygget i det 3. århundrede AC. Det siges, at dette er tre gange større end en moderne olympisk swimmingpool. Miraklet her er ikke kun dens enorme størrelse, men de underjordiske ledninger, der stadig fungerer og har leveret vand til dammen fra nærliggende reservoarer og i det sydvestlige hjørne kan vi bemærke en cisternsluse, der antyder, at vandet blev fordelt til andre relativt mindre damme i nærheden, der skildrer de fremragende hydrauliske ingeniørfærdigheder hos de gamle Sinhalese.
Månesten er en anden smukkeste og betagende skabelse af den gamle billedhugger. Det tjener som en dørmatte ved foden af en skridtflyvning til et buddhistisk helligdom, men billedhuggeren omdanner det til et kunstværk af stor ekspertise.

I had the great pleasure of having Lucky as my guide, or rather interpreter, in Anuradhapura. Lucky took us through the most interesting monastries and ruïnes and told passionatly about budhism and it’s history. Lucky had been a guide since 12 years and knows a lot about Budhism. Overall is was a very fun experience and I learned a lot from Lucky!

I had an outstanding guided tour in Anuradhapura and can highly recommend it. Our guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the history of the ancient city. His understanding of archaeology, architecture, and Buddhist philosophy was impressive, and he explained everything in a structured, engaging way. Over the course of the 7-hour tour, he provided a very detailed and engaging introduction to the ancient monasteries and sacred sites, explaining not only the historical background but also the cultural and spiritual significance behind them. Lucky was an amazing guide. He has deep knowledge of Buddhism, history and archaeology and brought the stones and sights to life. His English is excellent and he tells lots of stories. The day started with an overview of the life of Buddha and his teachings- and, importantly, how they relate to Buddhism as practiced today. As we explored the amazing sights, Lucky would point out interesting details and relate them to the bigger picture that he was building. We also visited Mihinthale to finish the day which was a great add on. I highly recommend Lucky as a guide.
