The Vienna Butterfly House was a nice experience. The place is certainly evocative, with butterflies flying freely among the tropical vegetation, although personally, we found it a bit small and were hoping to see a little more. (Schmetterlinghaus) Overall, however, it is worth a visit, especially if you are already in the Hofburg area. The value for money is all in all good, although, considering the size of the facility and the duration of the visit, I personally would have preferred a slightly lower price. An experience that was positive and unique nonetheless, especially for the possibility of seeing the butterflies from so close and in a tropical environment. 🦋
The actual place where the butterflies can be viewed is much smaller than the pictures show. It can be overcrowded at times, making it difficult to move around.
You walk in and Vienna disappears almost immediately. The air turns warm and humid, the windows fog slightly, everything around you goes aggressively green, and suddenly butterflies are drifting past your head like this tiny greenhouse decided normal personal space no longer applies. That's easily the best part of the Schmetterlinghaus. There are genuinely a lot of butterflies here, not the kind of place where you spend five minutes desperately hunting for one. The setting itself is beautiful too. Dense tropical plants, flowers, little paths, rocks and water, all of it making the place feel much more alive than a simple exhibition room. Slow down and actually stand somewhere for a while, and it turns out to be surprisingly relaxing. Butterflies settle on leaves, vanish into the vegetation, occasionally fly close enough that you instinctively duck your head out of the way. There's one fairly major catch though: it's tiny. Approach it like a normal tourist attraction and just walk through, and you could genuinely be done in around five minutes. Even with photos and a proper look around, this isn't somewhere most people spend a lot of time. At roughly €10 admission, that starts to make the value feel questionable. The trick is not treating it like something you need to complete. Sit with it a bit. Look for different butterflies. Take your time. Enjoy the strange little tropical bubble sitting in the middle of Vienna. Do that, and the whole experience makes a lot more sense. Also worth knowing: it gets genuinely warm inside. Great for the butterflies, considerably less great for sweaty tourists in August. A beautiful little place with plenty of butterflies and a genuinely pleasant atmosphere, but "little" is doing some heavy lifting here.
We first visited here over 25 years ago. Hasn't changed since then and really doesn't need to. The butterflies have a nice sanctuary an they're not afraid to fly close a stay on a flower/leaf for you to get a close up view you might not normally have.
This was amazing, well set out, loads of butterflies to see, very atmospheric. Only €10 per person.
The garden itself is nice and warming during the winter period. There are only a few species of butterflies and they are quite shy - they do not like coming very close to the visitors. But it was a nice experience overall.
Visited the butterfly house. Beautiful butterfly garden in a greenhouse. Several butterflies fly around. Short visit of about half an hour. 8 euros. (Senior)
Beautiful butterflies seen, it was a bit narrow to walk.
Very unique and enjoyable. You only need about an hour to see it so you can fit it in most anytime on your trip.
A lovely hidden gem in Schmetterlinghaus. The historic Art Nouveau greenhouse creates a magical atmosphere, filled with tropical plants and beautiful butterflies flying freely around you. For around €10, it was absolutely worth visiting — peaceful, unique, and very charming. The butterflies truly feel magical and make the whole experience special. One small downside: there are not many benches to sit and simply enjoy watching the butterflies for longer. Still, it was a beautiful experience and a wonderful place to visit while in Vienna.
