Queens Coronas Culinary Essentials Tour

Corona er det kulinariske epicenter for New Yorks latinamerikanske samfund, et sted, hvor du kan finde regionale specialiteter lige fra Tierra del Fuego op til Mexicos nordlige grænse til USA. På denne rundvisning i Coronas kulinariske fornødenheder går vi på gaden på en lørdag, hvor grillpladerne og grillerne i dette i forvejen livlige kvarter arbejder på overarbejde, og gadesælgerne kommer ud i fuld kraft. Fra Corona Plaza vil vi kigge forbi et familiedrevet mexicansk bageri for søde morgenmadsbagværk. Derfra fortsætter vi til et afsidesliggende sted, hvor vi sætter os ned med familier i nabolaget for at nyde en solid mexicansk brunch med pit-stegt ged. Vi fortsætter ad Roosevelt Avenue, stopper ved gadesælgere, et argentinsk bageri og gør et stop for en "cholado". Vi slutter vores dag på en lille bodega. Vores madtur i Queens fortsætter langs Roosevelt Avenue, som i weekenden er fyldt med gadesælgere fra hele Latinamerika. For at tilfredsstille vores søde tand falder vi ind i et argentinsk hjørnebageri for nogle traditionelle lækkerier og gør et stop for en "cholado", en hybrid frossen dessert og frugtsalat også kendt som den colombianske snekegle. Vi slutter vores dag på en lille bodega åbnet af en mand fra Veracruz, Mexico, der går indenfor til en festlig (reje)cocktail. Dette sidste stop efterlader os i udkanten af Jackson Heights og Elmhurst, to immigrantkvarterer, der har deres egne kulinariske rigdomme (og som udforskes yderligere som en del af vores længere Queens-vandring), en fristende påmindelse om, at vi i løbet af denne halve dag har kun ridset overfladen af, hvad der gør Queens til sådan et kulinarisk forjættet land.
