Saw this with my daughter with Mariska Hargitay! It was amazing!
Set in an intimate theatre, this interactive performance leaves you thinking. It is at turns tragic and sad, uplifting and inspiring, fun and uncomfortable. How about that for a night out? It does involve audience participation but they ask you if you wish to be involved and you can decline (but don't!). I will be thinking about this for a long time. A memorable experience. We saw it with Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter): he's only in the show for a few more weeks. If you can go, go!
Every Brilliant Thing wasn’t originally on our list for this trip to New York… and it ended up being one of the most memorable theater experiences I’ve had in a long time. We kept hearing about it while we were in the city, long lines, people talking about how hard it was to get tickets — and it became pretty clear this was one of the most in-demand shows in town. So we decided to go for it. I showed up early (very early — around 4 am for a 10 am box office open), and even then, I wasn’t alone. That tells you something. The rush process is worth knowing. There are only a handful of tickets available each day, and they’re general admission. You don’t get assigned seats right away because part of the show involves audience participation before it begins. In a really unique twist, those rush tickets actually end up turning into incredible seats vacated by those chosen to be in the show, once the show starts — we ended up just a couple rows from the stage for under $50, sitting next to people who had paid significantly more. Now the show itself. It’s just Daniel Radcliffe on stage no big set, no cast around him, and it is completely captivating. He tells a deeply personal, emotional story about growing up and navigating hardship, anchored by a list of “brilliant things” in life, small, simple, beautiful moments that make everything worthwhile. What makes this show truly special is how much the audience becomes part of it. People are pulled into the performance to play key roles in his life, not actors, just real audience members, and it creates moments that feel completely unscripted and incredibly real. At one point, an audience member delivered a line that hit so hard I looked over and saw my teenage son in tears. It wasn’t staged. It wasn’t forced. It just happened — and that’s the magic of this show. Daniel Radcliffe is phenomenal. From the moment he enters the space, he owns it. He’s funny, present, deeply human, and handles the unpredictability of audience interaction with a level of skill that’s honestly remarkable. You may go because of the name, but you leave appreciating him as a truly exceptional actor. This is not a big Broadway spectacle. It’s the opposite. And that’s exactly why it works. It’s intimate, emotional, and completely engaging from start to finish. Bottom line: If you have the chance to see Every Brilliant Thing, take it. It’s one of those rare theater experiences that feels different every night — and one you’ll probably be thinking about long after you leave.
Daniel Radcliffe is so warm and energetic that it is infectious. It feels like you are attending his therapy session more than you are seeing a play. You feel genuine warmth for the audience members who have parts in the show. I thoroughly enjoyed he performance.
