Parken er 1,317 kvadratkilometer (131, 693 hektar) og spænder fra 0 til 152 meter over havets overflade. Næsten 116 søer (Willu) og tanks findes spredt over hele Wilpattu. Wilpattu er den største og en af de ældste nationalparker i Sri Lanka. Wilpattu er blandt de øverste nationalparker verden kendt for sin leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) population. En fjernkameraundersøgelse blev foretaget i Wilpattu fra juli til oktober 2015 af Wildness & Wildlife Conservation Trust. En prøve af 49 individuelle leoparder blev fotograferet i det undersøgte område, og kernearealets tæthed var mellem Yala National Parks blok I og Horton Plains National Park.

We drove through a large part of the park with an experienced driver. Nature is really beautiful, many animals seen, including a bathing elephant, crocodiles, many birds, monkeys and even... almost a leopard. Recommended!

The driver came to pick us up at the hotel in the morning. We booked a full day. Clean food and a comfortable jeep made our day great. Everything was perfect. We saw a lot of animals. We saw elephants, deer, a bear and a lot of birds.
