Don’t miss seeing the Dohany synagogue. Very beautiful and an interesting history. Tour guide adds to the experience.
The price was incredibly steep. £71 for two seniors. (29,000 Hungarian forint), it’s supposed to be the largest synagogue in Europe and second largest in the world. Except we couldn’t even get into it. No explanations, just “private, staff only” everywhere. The only thing accessible and interesting was a description of the deportations and subsequent murder of Hungary’s Jews on 1944. The entrance fee was skilfully put in just Hungarian forint, so dividing everything by 400, rather than seeing equivalent in Euros , Dollars or Sterling, was not straightforward. Very disappointing. Avoid.
Disappointing. The guide was not professional enough in my opinion. Spoke very fast. Not knowlegable enough to my opinion for such an importent issue of the Jewish community and genocide in hungary. Spoke too much about himself. Total waste of time.
These are not tickets but passes that must be confirmed by the people at the reception. Good organization. I sincerely thank Flavia for helping us to know and understand the synagogue and Jewish culture. In perfect French, she was generous with information and advice. She was excellent and captivating. Bravo. It was a pleasure to listen to her.
Miki our guide went in depth, proved patient and was generous with his time. The synaguoge per se is very interesting as it combines several influences from within and from outside Judaism proper. We benefitted from a complete overview of Jewish history in Hungary over the last 200 years or so with many captivating insights. Highly recommended.
Women need to have their knees covered and it would have been helpful to have known this in advance. I had to purchase a ‘wrap’ prior to entering the synagogue as I was wearing shorts. Also the guide Milan was very knowledgeable but a little hard to understand.
Interesting but painful information about history of Jews in Hungary then and now Tragedy of innocent people
Exquisite ornate synagogue unlike any others. Our tour guide Flavia was very knowledgeable and passionate adding a lot of additional historical background to the tour. One can only imagine what attending a service would have been like pre Shoah
Sometimes you get the perfect tour guide and an amazing tour. We had both with Flavia. So knowledgeable, easy to understand, funny, and a total pleasure!!!! This was one of the highlights of our trip. Thank you Flavia!!!
A personalized tour with a knowledgeable friendly tour guide Claudia - really stands out as a tour guide
