Akropolis, som dominerer det moderne Athens centrum, var den antikke bys vigtigste og mest majestætiske helligdom, primært dedikeret til dens skytsgudinde, Athena.
Dionysos' Teater eller Dionysos' Teater Elefthereos er det vigtigste kendte friluftsteater i det antikke Athen og betragtes som verdens første teater. Det lå omkring 3 meter over templet og var en del af Elefthereos' helligdom. Dionysos var hovedstedet for attisk drama, fordi det var vært for Great Dionysia, Athens største teaterfestival.
Den storslåede Odeon af Herodes Atticus var den sidste store struktur bygget i antikken i Akropolis-området. Det var et typisk romersk amfiteater fra kejsertiden, med en kapacitet på mindst 5.000 mennesker. Monumentet blev renoveret i 1950'erne og har siden været vært for kulturelle begivenheder, for det meste i forbindelse med Athen-festivalen.
En særlig hovedindgang, der går ind i det indre, er et fællestræk for religiøse steder. Det var sædvanligt i oldgræsk arkitektur, at ethvert betydningsfuldt religiøst sted havde en primær port. Denne store port, Propylaia, har fået en enestående betydning i Akropolis. Det er hverken kun en port, der går ind i det hellige område, og det er heller ikke kun et arkitektonisk vedhæng til hovedtempelkomplekset. Propylaierne spiller en udsøgt og enestående rolle. De repræsenterer den athenske Akropolis storsindede natur. Det er derfor, i stedet for at være en simpel port, er Propylaia storslået bygget som et komplekst og harmonisk offentligt monument.
Parthenon er kendt som et af de mest betydningsfulde kulturelle steder i verden som et permanent ikon for det antikke Grækenland, demokrati og vestlig civilisation. Det begyndte i 447 f.Kr. og arbejdede på at bygge i en periode på kun ni år (sæsonrekorden) og i 438 BC, var færdig. Opgaven med udsmykning begyndte i 438 og sluttede i 432 f.Kr.
Et tempel dedikeret til gudinden Athena og Nike på den hellige klippe. Det blev bygget omkring 420 f.Kr. og er det første fulde ioniske tempel på Akropolis.
Et udsøgt bygningsværk med særlige attributter og arkitektonisk form på nordsiden af Akropolis-klippen. Ifølge legenden var det her, Poseidon og gudinden Athena kæmpede om byens navn.
Det kaldes også Olympeion eller Temple of Olympian Zeus og bygget til ære for gudernes fader, Zeus, der boede på Olympus-bjerget.
Hadrians port i Athen er en romersk bue. Den blev skabt til ære for ham under hans ophold i 131 e.Kr. og giver adgang til den olympiske Zeus tempel.
Et af de vigtigste kulturelle monumenter i Athen og i Grækenland generelt er Panathinaiko Stadium. Det er ellers kendt som Kallimarmaro og overlever den dag i dag i meget god stand. Som det er nævnt i sit navn, var gudinden Athena på dette stadium tilbedt og af denne grund blev der hvert år arrangeret konkurrencer til hendes ære. Som et projekt blev det afsluttet før det 6. århundrede f.Kr., men i sin endelige form med den dyrebare marmor kom det efter lang tid.
Evzonerne udfører det berømte "vagtskifte" på Syntagma foran monumentet for den ukendte soldat hver time. To Evzoner kommer foran den ukendte soldats monument for at overtage deres kollegers plads. Evzonerne, der indtil da stod ubevægelig vogter monumentet, starter en imponerende gang ved at strække deres lemmer, hvilket er et fantastisk skue. De samme trin følges af Evzones, der skal erstatte dem. Når showet, der varer omkring 15 minutter, er slut, står Evzones op stadig at bevogte monumentet, mens deres trætte kolleger vender tilbage til deres kaserne for at hvile.
Monumentet for den ukendte soldat bruges som referencepunkt og hyldest til de døde græske soldater ved de to nationale fejringer i Grækenland den 25/3/1821 og 28/8/1940
Det græske parlament er et tidløst ikon, der er en del af den græske kulturelle hukommelse i dag. Strukturen har udviklet sig, ændret og opdateret gennem årene.
Syntagma-pladsen er en af Athens mest centrale pladser, og muligvis den største i byens centrum.
Denne bygning var tæt forbundet med græsk historie og fungerede som den græske nationalforsamlings første permanente sted.
Landets mest prestigefyldte forskningsinstitut blev oprettet i 1926 og er under tilsyn af undervisningsministeriet. Akademiets hovedbygning er et bemærkelsesværdigt vartegn i Athen.
Etableret i 1837, er det ikke kun Grækenlands første universitet, men også Balkan-halvøen samt det østlige Middelhav.
Det blev skabt af den danske arkitekt Theophil Hansen som en del af hans berømte trilogi af neo-klassiske strukturer, som også omfattede akademiet og universitetsbygningen i Athen.
Bakken var en klippe, som gudinden Athena bar i sine hænder, og den faldt for hende i Athen, da hun hørte den dårlige nyhed, at en krage bar til hende. På toppen af Lycabettus, prydet med kirken Agios Georgios, vil du se Athen og Den Saroniske Bugt.
Antikkens Agora var omdrejningspunktet for det offentlige liv. Flere gange tiltrak det store åbne område athenernes opmærksomhed.
Plaka er Athens ældste og mest naturskønne kvarter, der har været beboet siden antikken og fortsætter den dag i dag. Monastiraki betyder "lille kloster" på græsk, da et stort kloster oprindeligt eksisterede på kvarterets hovedtorv.

Our guide, Dennis, is beyond exceptional!! This was the best of multiple tours we took in Athens. Since Dennis is an experienced former Presidential Guard he gave us keen insight into the responsibilities of guarding Parliament and the President of Greece’s home. He also took us to a scenic spot only the locals know that gave us a wonderful view of the city of roughly 4 million. Next we saw the Olympic Stadium that they built for the 1890 Olympics. Nasos was such an amazing tour guide! He was so much fun to spend time with on our last in Athens. Amazing! He was able to pivot…as we had seen most of the major tourist attractions that day. He took us to some of the best hidden gems around Athens that evening. He knew exactly where to be for the best sunset ever. And he’s an incredible photographer…with just a cell phone. He had a wealth of information. PLUS-he also does food tours. He took us to a fantastic tavern for some of the best food we had in Athens. Nasos was incredibly fun and knowledgeable. We had already seen many of the sites that day so he was awesome making a change to the tour and instead took us to the best places off the tourist trap for great shopping and food. He took us up to Lycabettus Hill for a spectacular sunset AND he is quite a photog. Nasos knew all the right places to shoot and how to take pics in such beautiful ways. He really is such joy and loves his job. Next time we want to try one of his food tours, but this time we had to head home the next day. You must give this amazing tour a try. We miss you Nasos! I went on the tour with my sister. We had an an absolutely wonderful time! Our tour guide Nasos was so nice. He picked us up early so we could have as much time as we could at Acropolis by avoiding rush hour traffic. The views were stunning, and we got some amazing photos of it at sunset. We enjoyed hearing the history of it and the symbols important to it. He also had supplementary materials for us to view about some of the places we saw. One thing we really appreciated was that there is an elevator to get to the top. My sister has trouble walking, and she would not have been able to get to the top and back otherwise. He had a wealth of knowledge about the places we saw, and we really enjoyed hearing about how the places came to be and the history behind them. Not only did we see the tourist areas, but we also saw Athens behind the scenes that many visitors to likely don't get to see. We saw the changing of the guards which was one of the most memorable stops for me. When he found out we hadn't had time to get any olive oil or souvenirs (we were in Athens for only a day and I literally went on the tour as soon as I arrived from the airport), he took us to the nicest store with so many beautiful items. We were able to get olive oil, and some lovely gifts for family and friends. I really love the Pythagorean cup I got which was prompted by seeing a demonstration of how it works. It has a lot of meaning for me because it has Poseidon on it, and I had just completed a 33.3k swim in Skopelos the day before. We finished the night off with an amazing meal and drinks, a rare treat indeed as some of the things we sampling were of limited availability which made it even more special. We definitely will be recommending this tour and Nasos to family, friends, and colleagues, and will plan to return so we can have more time exploring and learning about the wonderful culture and heritage of Greece!
