Athens is where Western civilisation began. The Acropolis still crowns the city after 2,500 years, but modern Athens is far more than its ruins — a vibrant capital of buzzing neighbourhoods, rooftop bars and a thriving food scene, all set against a backdrop of ancient marble.
Top Things to Do in Athens
The Acropolis and its perfect Parthenon are the essential first stop — arrive early or late to avoid the midday heat and crowds. The superb Acropolis Museum at its foot displays the original sculptures and friezes in context.
Wander the cobbled lanes of Plaka beneath the rock, explore the ancient Agora where Socrates once taught, and climb Lycabettus Hill for sunset. Athens is also the springboard for day trips to Cape Sounion, Delphi and the Saronic islands.

Best Time to Visit
April–June and September–October bring warm, comfortable weather ideal for sightseeing. July and August are very hot — visit ancient sites early in the day — and busy with crowds heading to the islands. Winters are mild and quiet, perfect for the museums.
Getting Around
The central sights cluster together and are best explored on foot. A modern, clean metro connects the centre, the port of Piraeus and the airport, and is the easiest way to avoid traffic. Most ancient sites are within walking distance of one another in the historic core.
