We booked this as a last-minute decision while staying in Cape Town and I’m so glad we did. Pickup was smooth from the V&A Waterfront area, and the drive to Aquila was comfortable with great commentary from our driver about South African history and landscapes. The game drive itself was the highlight. Our ranger was knowledgeable and passionate, pointing out everything from elephants and lions to smaller antelope and birds. We were lucky to see most of the animals up close, keeping in mind that a 10,000 hectare area is a wide area for the animals to roam. What stood out was how much the guides know - I wish we had done more research beforehand to ask more interesting questions, since the guide knew much more than we were capable of asking. Lunch was a proper buffet with both local and international dishes, and eating while overlooking the waterhole was surreal.
Myself and my partner decided to book the half day safari with Aquila when visiting South Africa from the US. We were able to see all of the big 5 and there were even some babies. We got so close to the animals and the pictures turned out fantastic. The property is incredibly beautiful and you are able to hang out at the pool after your safari. The breakfast and lunch they serve was decent as well. We were picked up by their shuttle in Cape Town and dropped off again at our hotel in the afternoon. Everything was smooth and effortless. For the price, considering transport, park fees, game drive, and meals are included, it’s good value. It’s not Kruger, but for a day trip from Cape Town, you can’t beat the convenience and the quality of the experience.
This was our first full day in Cape Town and it set the tone for the whole trip. Starting at Cheetah Outreach gave us an appreciation for South Africa’s conservation efforts before we even got to the wine. The cheetahs are stunning up close, and the run demonstration is fast, loud, and unforgettable. Then the Winelands portion delivered on every front - rolling vineyards, mountain views, Cape Dutch architecture, and wine that’s actually good. We stopped at both well-known estates and smaller boutique farms, so it felt varied. Lunch at one of the vineyards was the highlight for my wife - she still talks about the view and the roast chicken. The guide was knowledgeable about both the wine and the history of the area. We left with 4 bottles of wine and a memory card full of photos. Highly recommend if you want wildlife, wine, and scenery in one day. 3

We only had one day free from our Cape Town trip and wanted a real safari without flying to Kruger. The Aquila all-inclusive game drive was perfect. Pick-up was right on time at our hotel in the CBD and the 2-hour drive through the countryside was beautiful. Once at Aquila, the standard game drive vehicle was comfortable and our ranger was amazing. He knew exactly where to find the animals and explained everything - from lion behavior to how they track rhinos. Within 2 hours we saw lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos. The “all-inclusive” part is legit. We got a welcome snack and drink on arrival, the game drive, then a big buffet lunch with hot meals, salads, and desserts. Eating while watching a waterhole with giraffes was unreal. The reserve is malaria-free which made it stress-free for us. If you’re short on time but want the full Big 5 experience, this is the tour to book. We were back in Cape Town by 6pm with photos and memories that will last forever
My wife and I had never been on safari before and were nervous about choosing the right tour from Cape Town. Aquila’s small group Big 5 experience was the perfect choice. The group size made it feel personal compared to the big bus tours we saw at the reserve. Our ranger, Jaco, was patient with all our questions and used a spotting scope so we could see details like leopard cubs sleeping in a tree from far away. The drive itself is about 2 hours each way, but the scenery through the Tulbagh mountains makes it part of the experience. Aquila is a malaria-free reserve, which was a big plus for us since we didn’t want to take medication. The all-inclusive part is legit - breakfast snack on arrival, the game drive, and then a proper lunch with wine options. You’re not rushed either. We spent a good 2.5 hours on the drive and saw more animals than we expected. Only downside was it’s not “true wilderness” like Kruger since it’s a private reserve, but for accessibility and guaranteed Big 5 sightings, you can’t beat it for a day trip. 10/10 would recommend.
We traveled to Cape Town with our two kids, aged 9 and 12, and wanted them to experience a safari. The Aquila Big 5 small group tour was ideal for families. The drive isn’t too long for kids, and the rangers are great at engaging them - our guide let the kids use the binoculars and taught them how to track spoor. Seeing elephants up close was the highlight for all of us, and we even caught a cheetah sprinting after prey which the ranger explained was rare to see. Because it’s a small group, our kids didn’t feel lost in a crowd and could ask questions freely. The reserve is fenced and malaria-free, so parents don’t have to stress as much. The lunch buffet had kid-friendly options plus local dishes for adults. Facilities at Aquila are clean and well-kept, with a pool if you have extra time. The whole trip from Cape Town pick-up at 7am to drop-off at 6pm was smooth and well-organized. It’s pricey but worth it for the memories. Our kids still talk about “the day we saw lions”. If you have one day in Cape Town for safari, do this one.
I’m usually skeptical of “all-inclusive” day tours because they can feel rushed and touristy, but Aquila’s small group Big 5 drive was genuinely excellent. Between sightings, the ranger shared stories about the reserve’s history and conservation challenges. The all-inclusive lunch was a proper meal, not just snacks, and you eat overlooking the waterhole which sometimes has animals drinking while you eat. Cape Town to Aquila is about 2 hours each way, but they use comfortable vehicles and the road is good. For travelers with limited time who still want an authentic safari feel, this is the best option near Cape Town. I’d rate it 5 stars and already told friends to book the small group version specifically.
