My mother and I traveled together to Lalibela a couple of weeks ago and we had an exceptional trip thanks to Tewabe. Traveling with my mother, I was concerned about the relative scarcity of travelers but must say that from the moment we arrived at the airport in Lalibela until we departed, we were taken care of in every detail and made to feel totally welcome and comfortable for our entire stay. Tewabe even took the time to paint a portrait of my mother and me as a welcome gift since it was travel shortly after my birthday - and after visiting over 60 countries in the world and many famous sites such as Easter Island, Angkor Wat, the Taj Mahal and the Egyptian pyramids, I have to say that Lalibela and its churches are truly remarkable - and a must see for any enthusiast of history or archaeology. One of our highlights was visiting Tewabe's home, where we learned how to make injera and were treated to lunch and traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. For any trip to Lalibela, I cannot recommend Tewabe's services highly enough - he will treat you as a welcome guest and take care of you every step of the way for an unforgettable experience.
Dear Alexander, Thank you so much for your wonderful and thoughtful review. It was truly a pleasure to welcome you and your mother to Lalibela and to share this special place with you. I am delighted to hear that you both felt comfortable, safe, and well cared for throughout your visit. Knowing that Lalibela left such a strong impression on you, especially after your travels to so many remarkable destinations around the world, means a great deal to me. It was an honor to celebrate your birthday visit with the portrait, and I am happy that the experience became a memorable part of your journey. I am also glad that you enjoyed visiting my family home, learning how to make injera, sharing lunch together, and taking part in the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. These cultural moments are often some of the most meaningful memories of a trip. Thank you again for your kind recommendation and for choosing me to guide your experience in Lalibela. I hope the memories of the rock-hewn churches, the local culture, and the warm hospitality stay with you for many years to come. You and your mother will always be welcome back in Lalibela. Warm regards, Tewabe Derebe Lalibela Tour Guide and Cultural Host
We are so thrilled with our experience visiting Lalibela for two nights with Tewabe as our guide! Tewabe and his brother Lule helped us feel very comfortable and cared for the entire time. On our morning Tewabe met us at the airport with a van and after a beautiful drive to Lalibela, we checked into our accommodation which we had chosen to book independently. Next we went to the market with Tewabe which was especially large and interesting to see on a Saturday. Tewabe showed us different areas and explained some of the products without ever pressuring us to purchase anything. Next he took us to his home where we met his friendly sister and they showed us how to cook injera, shiro and we even roasted coffee beans before enjoying coffee and lunch together. Lule then guided us for our visit to the half of the churches, explaining the symbolism and significance of everything we saw. He is very knowledgable and passionate while also being patient and calmly answering our questions. On Sunday morning Lule and Tewabe took us to morning mass and again considered details to make us feel comfortable such as lending us Ethiopian cloth wraps to wear. Lule took us into the church to see the priests chanting which was an incredibly special experience. After visiting the other half of the churches that day, Lule invited us to his home for food and drink where they were having a special holiday celebration with family and friends. They kindly adapted any activities to our wishes, including when we were tired on the second afternoon and wanted to rest at our accommodation. On our final morning, we took a beautiful short hike with Tewabe before returning to the airport. We are so grateful and will never forget our experience and new friendships! We happily recommend Tewabe and his team!
Thank you so much for this incredibly thoughtful and detailed review! It truly means a lot to me, my brother Lule, and our family. We are very happy to hear that your time in Lalibela was such a special and memorable experience. It was a real pleasure to welcome you, share our culture, food, coffee ceremony, churches, and family celebrations with you. We are especially glad that you felt comfortable and cared for throughout your visit — this is always very important to us. Thank you also for your kind words about Lule’s guiding and explanations inside the churches. He will be very happy to hear this. We also enjoyed the beautiful moments we shared together, from the Saturday market to the morning mass, hiking, and spending time with our families. Your openness and kindness made the experience special for us as well, and we are grateful for the new friendship we made with you. Thank you again for recommending us so warmly. You are always welcome back to Lalibela anytime — it would be wonderful to see you again in the future! Warm regards, Tewabe and Lule
I am very grateful for running into to Tewabe and booking this tour with him. from the moment I landed at the airport, he greeted me with a sign with my name, and had a very personable outlook. He was able to answer all my questions and make sure I stayed in one of the nicest accommodation here in Lalibella. Despite being one of the few tourists at the time I was visiting I did not fear at all my stay or my visit because he ensured all my safety and well-being. What added to the experience was the team he works with; Lule the other guide, another very personable and cheerful person was very patient answering all my questions and taking the zillion pictures I asked for and the driver Mario; all make a lovely team. I would not hesitate to recommend to Tewabe and his team for an amazing experience at lalibella

I had such an amazing experience with Tewabe in Lalibela. From the moment I arrived, he was incredibly welcoming, kind, and attentive. He made sure I felt comfortable at all times and truly went out of his way to make my stay special. He showed me the incredible rock-hewn churches, took me to some beautiful hidden spots around Lalibela, and shared so much about the local culture and history. In the evening, he even brought me to a traditional local bar, which made the experience even more authentic and fun. What I really appreciated is how genuine and caring he is. He didn’t just show me around — he made me feel like a friend rather than a visitor. Thanks to him, I had one of the best local experiences I could have hoped for. I highly recommend Tewabe to anyone visiting Lalibela. He will make your stay truly unforgettable 😊
Thank you so much for your kind words — I truly appreciate it! I’m very happy to hear that you had such a great experience in Lalibela. It was my first visit to Ethiopia and I enjoyed it very much. The trip was 20 days long. A first we travelled in a small group to the far south among original tribes and then we moved to the north. We visited some churches of Ethiopan Ortodox Church near Tana lake, in Gondar, Simien mountains and finally went to the marvelous holy city of Lalibela. We admired beautiful paintings on the walls of churches which express great spiritual depth and symbolic meaning in gestures of biblical persons. It is a perfect mean of teaching of the biblical events and also the history of the Ethiopian Ortodox Church and its saints. It’s incredible how well preserved and maintained thes paintings are. When visiting Lalibela’s amazing and unique rock-hewn churches I met Tewabe who provided me with kind help and welcome. He generously gave me information about the holy city and detailed explanation. I really appreaciate his friendly and warm approach which did not end with my departure from Ethiopia but continues. Thanks to his photos and videos I am brought even closer to the atmosphere of important religious events and the way they are experienced by local Christians. Thank you Tewabe and hope to return to Lalibela one day again! Ivana

It sounds like you had an incredible journey—from the cultures of the south to the historic and spiritual treasures of the north. I’m especially glad that your time in Lalibela and the rock-hewn churches left such a strong impression on you. The paintings and their deep spiritual meaning are something very special, and it’s wonderful to hear how much you appreciated them. It was a real pleasure meeting you and spending time together in Lalibela. Thank you for your kind words about my guidance—it means a lot to me. I’m also very happy that we’ve stayed connected, and that the photos and videos help you feel close to those beautiful moments and religious celebrations. You are always welcome back to Lalibela anytime—I would be very glad to see you again! Warm regards, Tewabe

Tewabe was the most hospitable and attentive local tour guide we could have asked for in Lalibela. He truly went above and beyond to make sure my friends and I were well cared for and comfortable throughout our stay. He organised unforgettable local experiences, including welcoming us into his home to learn how to make injera and doro wat, and hosting a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. He also took us to a local bar to see traditional dancing and arranged visits to a restaurant with breathtaking scenic views. Tewabe organised an extremely knowledgeable guide for the rock-hewn churches and ensured we could safely navigate the large crowds during the Christmas celebrations at the church, which was an incredible and once-in-a-lifetime experience. His kindness, professionalism, and deep local knowledge made our trip truly special. I cannot recommend Tewabe highly enough to anyone visiting Lalibela.

I met Tewabe by chance in Lalibela while waiting for friends to visit the churches, and it was my luckiest encounter. With him, I discovered so much more than just the churches, which are already breathtakingly beautiful. I have never put anyone so kind, attentive, friendly, and passionate about his city. He has such a desire to share his knowledge, to show off the city and its surroundings, the local cuisine, and the beauty of the mountains around the city. These were truly wonderful moments we shared, and I felt like I was with a long-time friend! You must visit Lalibela and its wonders, and especially do it with Tewabe for a truly unique experience. I have rarely been so charmed by a place, and Tewabe and his sister are largely responsible for that. I spent three days in the city, which allowed me to visit all 11 churches, attend a religious ceremony, explore the city with Tewabe, discover different neighborhoods while shopping, meet his family and learn how to cook injera, experience a coffee ceremony, take a wonderful hike in the mountains overlooking the city and discover village life, and admire truly exceptional views of the surrounding mountains. Most importantly, I spent long hours chatting and laughing with Tewabe and his sister, Lasta. He took such good care of me, and I don't know how to thank him enough. Come to Lalibela; it's the best time to visit because the city isn't overrun with tourists, and you'll have a unique and authentic experience in this place steeped in history, surrounded by truly magnificent panoramas, where you'll meet incredibly kind people. I wish all travelers who come to Lalibela the chance to visit it with Tewabe. Thank you, Tewabe, for everything, and I hope to return to Lalibela one day with my family to show them all its wonders. Dear Amel, Thank you so much for your wonderful words. Meeting you by chance in Lalibela was truly a special moment, and sharing those three days with you was an absolute joy. From exploring the 11 churches, attending a religious ceremony, and discovering the city’s neighborhoods, to learning to cook injera, experiencing a coffee ceremony, and hiking the mountains overlooking Lalibela — every moment was made even more memorable by your curiosity, warmth, and kindness. It was a pleasure to share the beauty, culture, and everyday life of my city with you. Your energy, openness, and enthusiasm made me feel as though I was showing Lalibela to an old friend. My sister Lasta and I were so happy to welcome you as part of our family during your stay. I am truly grateful that you enjoyed not only the sights but also the people, food, and experiences that make Lalibela unique. You will always be part of our memories, and I hope that one day you return with your family so we can create even more unforgettable moments together. Thank you again for your kindness and for allowing us to share our city with you. Lalibela is a remarkable place, but it is the wonderful people we meet along the way — like you — who make it truly unforgettable. With warmest regards, Tewabe
Fantastic. My advise to all of you who hesitate about the price... IT IS REAL. But that's not the important thing about the tour. IF YOU ARE A SOLO TRAVELER, If you love to mingle with local people, have a hint about their culture and know them better, Tewabe is your guide!! This is not the regular tour that takes you on a van from the airport to the hotel, from the hotel to the churches and from the churches to the airport, this is about knowing and sharing with the people. The first day Tewabe was waiting for me with a big signal when I arrived in the morning, we went for a short walk in the city, entered some houses and saw the flour grinding process to make Injera. Then Tewabe was super kind and opened his home doors to me, we had a lovely coffee ceremony and a lunch with his sister, who taught me some words in Aramaic and taught me to cook injera. In the afternoon Tewabe left me with Lul my second guide who showed me 6 churches, he was amazing we walked through the churches at a very slow pace (no rushing), super friendly, patient and open to answer all my question. When we finished at the churches Tewabe was waiting for us and took me to a short hiking to a panoramic view (360° around lalibela) we saw the sunset there and it was amazing, contemplating the beautiful of Amara's landscape. Then we went to have dinner and finished our day drinking a honey wine at a local. The second day I was again with lul visiting the remaining 5 churches, after that Tewabe took me to the merkato and the souvenir shops to finally drop me at the airport. Amaizing, I was hesitating to go, but I do not regret at all, Tewabe is super flexible and very open to welcome you as his friend and not his customer. Please DO IT!!
Dear Andres, Thank you so much for your wonderful and detailed review! I’m truly happy and grateful to hear how much you enjoyed your 2-day cultural experience in Lalibela. It means a lot that you appreciated not only the famous churches but also the chance to connect with local people, traditions, and everyday life — that’s exactly what I love to share with travelers. I’m so glad you enjoyed the walk through town, visiting local homes, and seeing the Injera-making process. It was such a pleasure to welcome you into my home for the coffee ceremony and cooking time with my sister — she’ll be very happy to hear your kind words! Sharing food, coffee, and stories is always one of the best parts of the tour. I’m also very pleased to know that you appreciated Lul’s guiding. He’s a wonderful and patient guide, and I’ll be sure to pass your thanks to him. I smiled reading your description of the sunset hike and panoramic view — it really is one of Lalibela’s most peaceful and magical spots. Thank you again for mentioning the flexibility and friendly atmosphere of the tour. I truly believe that travel should be about real connection, respect, and joy — not just sightseeing. Knowing that you felt more like a friend than a customer means a lot to me. You’ll always have friends waiting for you here in Lalibela! I hope one day we’ll meet again. Until then, I wish you safe and meaningful journeys wherever you go. Warm regards, Tewabe Local Guide – Lalibela, Ethiopia
This was such an amazing tour with Tewabe and his partner. I highly recommend it.you will not regret it. I was looked after from my arrival at the airport to the gate at drop off!I saw all the cave churches a beautiful blessing cérémonie inside this morning, I found out all about the history and what each one represents We had a lovely meal at a restaurant last night, did the coffee cérémonie, had a go at making injera and was invited back to the guides home to meet his family. We saw the food market this .morning I was so blessed will remember it forever. He even got a tuk tuk for me when I was tired to walk. I really felt comfortable the whole.tome. the Blue Nile was wonderful right in the center and was included in the tour.met up with other lovely tourists there. What an amazing tour!
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! I’m truly delighted that your 2-day Lalibela tour left such special memories. From the moment we met at the airport, it was a joy to share this beautiful region with you. Walking through the cave churches together, seeing the blessing ceremony, and exploring the history and stories behind each one are moments I’ll always remember, especially sharing them with someone so curious and engaged. I loved seeing your excitement during the coffee ceremony and when making injera — it’s always a joy to share these traditions and to invite guests into my home and family life. Visiting the local food market, enjoying a meal together, and even arranging a tuk-tuk when you needed a rest were small touches that I hoped would make you feel completely comfortable, so I’m thrilled to hear that they did. I’m also glad you enjoyed the Blue Nile and meeting other travelers along the way — it makes Lalibela feel alive, vibrant, and welcoming. Your enthusiasm and openness to experiencing everything, from the spiritual moments in the churches to the everyday life of the town, made the tour truly special for me as a guide. It was an honor to share Lalibela with you, and I hope your memories continue to bring joy long after your visit. You are always welcome back, and I would be delighted to explore even more of this incredible region together in the future! Warm regards, Tewabe
