Santorini Volcano & Hot Springs: The Caldera Day Trip

The black lava islet in the middle of Santorini's caldera is an active volcano you can actually climb — then cool off with a swim in the warm, iron-red springs beside it. Here is how to do the classic volcano and hot springs day trip, with the best-rated daytime cruises to book.

At a glance

  1. 1Morning boat from Fira old port
  2. 2Hike the Nea Kameni crater
  3. 3Swim in the sulphur hot springs
  4. 4Taverna lunch on Thirassia

Morning: down to the old port

Most volcano boats leave from Fira's old port at the base of the cliff. Get down early — the cable car (around €6 each way) builds long queues from mid-morning, and the alternative is 588 zigzag steps shared with donkeys. Daytime departures typically run between 9am and 2pm, and basic caldera cruises start from around €30, so this is one of the most affordable big experiences on the island.

Hiking Nea Kameni's crater

The boat drops you at Nea Kameni, the younger of the two lava islets, for a guided walk to the crater rim. The trail climbs about 130 metres over loose volcanic gravel — allow 20–25 minutes up and wear closed shoes, not flip-flops. At the top you'll see steaming sulphur vents and a 360° view back at the caldera cliffs. Bring water and a hat; there is zero shade on the island. A small landing fee (a few euros) is usually paid on arrival.

The hot springs swim

Next stop is the cove at Palea Kameni, where volcanic vents warm the shallows to a comfortable 30–35°C. Boats anchor offshore, so you jump in and swim about 50 metres to the warm, rust-coloured water. Wear a dark or old swimsuit — the iron and sulphur can permanently stain light fabric — and leave jewellery on board, as silver tarnishes on contact.

Afternoon: Thirassia, the quiet Santorini

Full-day itineraries add two to three hours on Thirassia, the islet that broke off Santorini in the great eruption. Have a grilled-fish lunch at the tavernas of Korfos port, or climb the steps to Manolas village for caldera views without the crowds. Half-day versions skip Thirassia and return by early afternoon — check the route before booking, as the difference in length is significant.

Volcano & hot springs day — FAQ

Is the Nea Kameni volcano hike difficult?
It's a moderate 20–25 minute uphill walk on loose volcanic gravel with no shade. Anyone with reasonable fitness can do it, but closed shoes, water and sun protection are essential. You can also stay by the landing jetty if you'd rather skip the climb.
Can you swim at the Santorini hot springs?
Yes — boats anchor near the cove at Palea Kameni and you swim a short distance to the warm, mineral-rich shallows. Wear a dark swimsuit, as the iron-rich water stains light fabric, and remove silver jewellery before jumping in.
How long does the volcano and hot springs tour take?
Half-day cruises covering Nea Kameni and the hot springs run about 3 hours. Full-day versions add Thirassia (and sometimes Oia) and last 6–8 hours. Book a morning departure a day or two ahead in July and August, when boats fill quickly.
