Resplan

Though we appreciate the Whitney Plantation’s allowing their guides to approach their tours through a “lens that is personal to them, shaped by their experience and insights”, surely there must be some standard? Our guide started the tour by recounting that his teachers had “lied” to him about slavery. As an educator, I get that. The disservice our education system has done to Black history is appalling. However, that seemed to be the whole thrust of his presentation! For the first three or four stops, we had to listen to him excoriate “public schools,” our “public school system,” and “teachers” (his words) over and over and over again. We got the point the first time! His personal agenda and feelings about teachers should not be the basis of his tour. Give us the “unvarnished truth” about slavery but spare us the tirade against teachers, especially when he was painting with such a broad brush. That may have been his experience in Mississippi, but it was not mine in Maryland. And all of those things that he said that are not taught in schools today, well, we absolutely do and have been for years. Perhaps this historian needs to do a little bit more research. This man did not know I was a teacher, so I tried not to take it personally, but honestly, I was a little over it when he told the group that if we didn't want the truth, “then this is not the tour for you and you should go find another tour”. Really? Is that acceptable? Our group thought that we were coming to learn about the lives of enslaved people on the Whitney Plantation. We were wrong. Although our guide was knowledgeable about the minutia of the history of the slave trade and US history in general, it wasn’t even till the end of the tour that I learned they grew sugar cane. We were shown the slave quarters. How many families lived in one cabin? What foods did they eat? Did they grow their own food? Could they visit other people? Not talked about. We saw the overseers cabin. How did he treat the slaves? How did the overseer get his job? Was he paid? Not talked about. What jobs did domestic slaves do? How were they treated? what was it like to work in the fields? How many hours did they work? Not talked about. I guess we truly misunderstood what the tour was all about. Or maybe it just comes down to the guide you happen to get randomly. How unfortunate.
Is very powerful. Hopefully it will soften the hearts of those racists people that still judge others by the color of their skin.
We truly enjoyed the tour of the Whitney Plantation, and we very much enjoyed the swamp and all the creatures we saw, truly a wonderful, terrific tine
I had a great driver. He definitely gave us some insight on New Orleans history around the city. The plantation tour was definitely insightful, informative and emotional because of the history it holds. It’s one thing to see it in movies, hear about it in history books but to see it person was definitely something unbelievable and that it actually happened to black people, black children at that. The tour was worth and the driver was excellent. I’m sorry i couldn’t remember the drivers name but he was good!!!!
Our tour guide was Kimberly for our bus ride. She had so much information about Louisiana and she tough us so many new things and was very informative.!
Thanks so much, John. Kimberly is a great asset to Gray Line. She loves her guests.
My experience was emotional and somber. But, I would strongly recommend this tour. Although my tour was a self guided excursion, I recommend using the guided version. The guides are knowledgeable and can provide you a much deeper understanding of the artifacts and living and working situations.
Thank you Brenda for touring with us. The Whitney experience that is somber and thought provoking.
Very raw, honest and heartbreaking. A humbling experience. My heart is overwhelmingly heavy. Although it was painful, this place should be preserved so the history does not repeat itself.
The reason this experience was curated was for the reasons you noted. It is important to understand so that actions are never repeated.
I loved this experience! My friends & I had such a great time! From Whitney plantation to the Bauou tour . . Our tour guide Katie was wonderful
Katie loves her guests and makes sure that you leave with knowledge and then joy from the Bayou portion.
Very informational, would highly recommend.
Thank you so much.
Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, wear sunblock and perhaps a sun hat. Bring your camera and the self guided tour was better for me, but if you have questions, go for the guide.
What a delightful review with very helpful hints. Thank you.
