De är Egyptens tre huvudpyramider, byggda under 4:e dynastin (cirka 2550 f.Kr.). Pyramiderna i det forntida Egypten byggdes som gravar för kungar (och drottningar), och det var en exklusiv ära att ha en sådan grav. Denna tradition gällde dock endast i Gamla och Mellersta kungadömena. Idag finns det mer än 93 pyramider i Egypten, de mest kända är de i Giza. Den berömda stora pyramiden i Khufu är den överlägset största, högsta och mest intakta pyramiden i Egypten. Efter dess konstruktion blev det ett av "den antika världens sju underverk", och idag är det det enda som finns kvar. Under en period av 4300 år var pyramiden också den högsta byggnaden på jorden, tills fransmännen byggde Eiffeltornet 1889. Khufus Pyramid är byggd helt av kalksten och anses vara ett arkitektoniskt mästerverk. Den innehåller cirka 1 300 000 block med en vikt från 2,5 ton till 15 ton. Dess fyrkantiga bas täcker 13 tunnland och dess sidor mäter cirka 230 m (755 fot). Dess fyra sidor vetter mot de fyra kardinalpunkterna exakt och den har en vinkel på 52 grader
Khafre's Pyramid, eller den 2:a pyramiden, är lätt att känna igen på lagren av dess ursprungliga höljesstenar som fortfarande finns kvar nära dess topp och detta, tillsammans med det faktum att den faktiskt står på en högre del av platån, ger intrycket att det är högre än den stora pyramiden. Den har också förlorat en del av sin ursprungliga höjd genom åren, en gång var den 143,5 m (471 fot) hög.
Khafres son, Menkaure, byggde den minsta av de tre huvudpyramiderna på Gizaplatån. Den här var bara 65,5 m (215 fot) lång, nuförtiden 62 m (203 fot), med sidor på 105 m (344 fot) och en vinkel på 51,3 grader. Man tror att denna pyramid ändrades under sin konstruktion och gjordes mycket större än vad som ursprungligen planerats. Den ursprungliga, mindre pyramiden hade en enkel nedåtgående korridor och gravkammare, men när den utvidgades byggdes en ny korridor med 3 portkulisar och en liten panelkammare. Ännu senare tillkom ytterligare en gravkammare, tillsammans med ett förråd, på en lägre nivå. Denna pyramid har, liksom sina 2 grannar, en norrläge som vetter mot ingången.
