Sixtinska kapellet har fått sitt namn från påven Sixtus IV della Rovere (påve från 1471 till 1484) som lät restaurera den gamla Cappella Magna mellan 1477 och 1480. 1400-talets utsmyckning av väggarna inkluderar: de falska draperierna, berättelserna om Moses, Berättelser om Kristus och porträtten av påvarna. Den utfördes av ett team av målare som ursprungligen bestod av Pietro Perugino, Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio och Cosimo Rosselli. På takpiren målade Matteo d'Amelia en stjärnklar himmel. Arbetet med freskerna började 1481 och avslutades 1482. Detta är också datumet för följande arbeten i marmor: skärmen, körstallet (där koristerna tog plats) och det påvliga vapenet över ingången dörr.

Our guide Mickey was amazing. Deep knowledge of the Vatican, its art, its history and its culture within the context of Italian culture as well. Very hot but his energy and care for us made our day thoroughly enjoyable!
The tour was good. It’s very busy and crowded during the summer. 3 hours is not long enough to properly see the important areas.

This is the tour you want to take! It was the absolute highlight of our five week holiday, and the event we still talk about the most. There is so much to see and experience at the Vatican that it would be easy to be overwhelmed. We found that learning about the history of the location, site, and development was a fascinating insight into the actual buildings and art. It also helps that our guide (Nicola) is insightful, experienced, and fun. While it is difficult to select just one element, the experience of being in the Sistine Chapel was improved by all the information he shared with us prior to arrival. The early access is worth it--you'll appreciate that the chapel is not overflowing with people--and having a deeper understanding of the frescoes and art. Absolutely the BEST part of our time in Rome.
