Simply wonderful

Where do I start, simply the best excursion I have been on. Our guide was friendly and informative. I now know more about Tunisian history and agriculture than I do my own country. We drove for no more than 2 hours before either a rest stop or a tour stop. The bus was air conditioned and comfortable: Each stop was equally interesting but wonderfully varied. We saw a Roman amphitheatre, a rock cave house and met the family who live there. Had lunch where George Lucas stayed while filming Star Wars. Stayed over night in Douz in a nice hotel with pool, full air conditioning and a lovely choice of food. We rode camels at sunset in the Sahara, drove over a huge salt lake and then had a 4 x 4 drive across the sand dunes. We ended our tour after visiting an ancient mosque and we even had time to buy a few souvenirs at a well stocked and reasonably priced shop. Worth every penny, in fact it would have still been good value at twice the price. Really well organised and while it felt like an adventure it was comfortable at every point.

TUI 2 day Sahara film set tour

Booked with TUI at hotel. Overall a great tour and value for money and a good way of seeing more of the southern part of Tunisia. However, I mainly went on it to see Star Wars New Hope sets/areas, and if you solely want to see these sets (if you grew up in the 70s and 80s like me) this tour is not for you. You will need to find a specialist tour group (I presume) to take you solely to places such as Lars Homestead Exterior (Chott el Jerid / Chott el Gharsa) and Sidi Bouhlel / Midès Canyons, where the Sand people and Jawa scenes where filmed. This tour only takes you to Matmata museum (internal Lars homestead) and Phantom Menace, Mos Espa, but is in the region of the other places. The other film set it goes to is The English Patient which was an impressive area. The rest of the tour is NOT film sets but more history and cultural areas. It's a 745mile round trip so be prepared for a lot of time on a coach or bus. We were on a coach of 37 people (!) so it was a big group and at times, at stops, it felt a bit rushed and crowded, especially at Luke's home (internal) and you were conscious of needing to get back to the coach. If it was a private tour this wouldn't be the case. All food is included but NOT DRINKS. The overnight hotel was basic but the AC worked which was all that mattered. The optional camel ride in the Sahara is a must for 50 Dinar and was amazing. The 4x4s were brilliant the following day and we had a great fun driver doing lots of off-road. You have to bear in mind that it's a TUI tour and at each stop people are trying to sell you stuff. Just say no if not wanted and people go away. The phantom menace site was so remote and good to see but let down by being filled with stalls and people trying to sell you stuff and people walking around with camels trying to get a photo for dinar. The site has been taken over by that but it was good to see anyway and the 4x4 trip to it was amazing. I went with my 18 year old son and he loved it overall as I did. Not recommended for young children. By the time we went to the Holy City site (last stop) we just wanted to get back to the hotel. This was closed and we just viewed it from the top of a shopping centre then went downstairs were a chap tried to sell you rugs! We would recommend it despite some of its negatives. The driver and guide were great and lovely. The guide gave you info along the way as we passed through various areas on the way to the next stop. He was very informative with his facts. Nice memories and photos from the two day tour and you can tell where George Lucas got his inspiration from just being in the region.

Amazing sights but let down by the overnight stay

The highlights of this tour were excellent. Visiting the El Jem Amphitheatre, the Berber house, riding camels in the Sahara, watching the sunrise over the desert and visiting the Star Wars film sets were all memorable experiences. The jeep ride across the dunes was also great fun, and our guide was friendly, knowledgeable and happy to take photos without expecting tips. Unfortunately, the overnight stay let the trip down. The hotel was very basic, the buffet offered limited choice, and drinks had to be paid for throughout the trip despite many guests coming from all-inclusive hotels. This wasn’t a problem in itself, but it would have been nice to have been informed beforehand. One particularly frustrating aspect of the evening was that the same song seemed to be played repeatedly for hours. We were trying to relax and enjoy a game of cards after a long day of travelling and sightseeing, but the constant repetition became irritating. The second day started earlier than advertised with a 4am wake-up call, although the Sahara sunrise made it worthwhile. The Star Wars set was impressive, but having vendors set up within the attraction took away from the atmosphere slightly. The journey back felt longer than necessary. After the sunrise, jeep ride and Star Wars set, some of the later stops didn’t add much value and it would have been better to head back sooner with only essential comfort breaks. Overall, there are some fantastic experiences included in this tour and I’m glad we did it, but a few improvements to the accommodation, food and organisation would make it much better.

2 days full of impressions

This two-day trip was excellent and the highlight of our vacation. The tour guide Jelli, who conducted the tour in 3 languages, was fantastic and there was no question about Tunisia that he could not answer. The bus driver was also great and even stopped at a bank so that one could exchange money. It is a long 2 days when you have to get up at 5 and 3 in the morning, so be prepared. You spend a lot of time on the bus, but it stops every 1.5 hours so that one can buy something to drink and use the restroom, etc. The camel ride and the jeep safari were the highlights of the trip for us. The sunrise over the salt flats was also worth seeing. The meals were sufficient. If you visit Tunisia, I would recommend this trip, as you see so much and it was an excellent value for money!

Utterly magical

An unforgettable experience - two days travelling over 1200 km across this beautiful country in the company of an exemplary tour guide and excellent driver. From start to finish, it was brilliantly curated to include so many amazing sights and scenes, we laughed and were entertained as we learnt about the history, culture, economy, and life in the places we visited. We were stunned by the spectacular El Jem Colosseum; we ate a delicious Berber breakfast of bread, honey & olive oil in Matmata; we were enchanted by the Star Wars caves; we rode camels and watched the sunset at the gateway to the Sahara in Douz; we saw the sun rise by stunning salt lake Chott el Djerid; we were bounced around (such fun!) on a jeep safari into the dunes by Onk Jemak; witnessed a mirage; saw a real oasis en route, and we ended in Kairouan by the ancient mosque to hear the call to prayer. All the time, accompanied by an utterly exceptional tour guide, Dr Waseem, who taught us so much about his life and experience of this country… driver, Mr Anis deserves a mention as he too was superb. I’d totally recommend this excursion to anyone coming to Sousse.

Amazing.

Great experience! Our guide was so kind especially to our children he even went to buy them hickeys. He looked on his phone and timed all day to take us exactly to sunset during our camel ride. The whole excursion was well organized. We never waited anywhere. The jeep in the desert was spectacular! The oasis is wonderful. I was referring this excursion at any time. Thanks to our guide and the driver who took us from our hotel in Sousse.

Fascinating and very well organised tour.

This was a well organised and fascinating tour which we couldn’t recommend highly enough. Everything from the amazing ruins of the amphitheater at El Jen to the changing landscapes of the Sahara from the rocky desert of Matmatra to the sandy and salt plain deserts were incredible. It is without doubt one of the most enjoyable holiday tours we have ever been on.

Awesome 2-day trip to the Sahara and more

We had a brilliant trip with Mo & Salah in February 2026. Highly recommended trip if you want to exlpore the country. El Jem was great start and the 4x4 drive and camel ride into the desert were the highlight. Two long days but well worth it.

A Very Full but Well Paced Two Days

A lot of travelling , of course, but there were conveniently spaced stops for toilets, coffee, etc. en route. There was adequate time built in to enjoy each location. If not availing oneself of the camel riding opportunity, there was not much else to do at the location - although some did say they enjoyed the opportunity for a walk. The Kairouan Mosque photo opportunity turned out to be from the roof of carpet warehouse but gave a good view. The demonstration of wares involved no hard-sell, and the asking prices struck us as being remarkably inexpensive - such that we began to wish we had the need for such an item. Downstairs, there was a range of craft items and other souvenirs for sale - again at unusually attractive prices. The coach was comfortable and the driver very good. Our guide was knowledgeable and informative, and fluent in at least 3 European languages: English, German and French. (His commentary was given in English and in German, but with a personal translation for a couple of French speakers in the party.) His onboard commentary wasn't always easy to follow because of some distortion by the PA system possible aggravated by speaking too close to the microphone. We found the trip a very enjoyable experience.
