Leonidas var en kung av den grekiska stadsstaten Sparta, och den 17:e av den Agiadiska linjen, en dynasti som hävdade härstamning från den mytologiska halvguden Herakles och Cadmus. Leonidas var son till kung Anaxandridas II. Han efterträdde sin halvbror kung Kleomenes I på tronen 489 f.Kr. Leonidas hade ett anmärkningsvärt deltagande i det andra persiska kriget, där han ledde de allierade grekiska styrkorna till en sista strid vid slaget vid Thermopyle (480 f.Kr.) medan han försökte försvara passet från den invaderande persiska armén; han dog i slaget och kom in i myten som ledare för de 300 spartanerna. Centrumet representerar historien som en interaktiv berättelse och diskurs: I de tre utställningshallarna Leonidas, Dienekes och Thermopyle erbjuder multimediaapplikationer besökarna en virtuell resa till de persiska krigens tid och slagfält, som den antike historikern Herodotos berättar, medan själva slaget vid Thermopyle får liv i en digital 3D-film.
Slaget vid Thermopyle-kriget utkämpades 480 f.Kr. mellan grekerna och perserna samtidigt som sjöslaget vid Artemision ägde rum. I början av september ledde den persiska armén min Xerxis når Thermopyles gångar. Grekerna har valt denna strategiska plats för att möta den persiska attacken. Xerxis har befallt Leonides, ledaren för den grekiska armén att ge upp sin arsenal, men han svarade "Kom och hämta dem". Två dagar i rad kämpade grekerna hjältemodigt. Den tredje dagen förråder Efialtes grekerna och visar perserna vägen för att komma till baksidan av grekerna. Persiska armén omringar grekerna. Leonides är kvar på platsen för slaget tillsammans med 300 Spartaner, 700 Thespieis och 400 Thivaious, lojala mot sitt hemlands lagar. Han faller död av persiska pilar.

Great experience with our guide, Nikos. He was very knowledgeable and personable. The Thermopylae site is undergoing improvements but completely accessible and apparently easier to navigate than in the past. The experience was incredible and honestly surreal. The museum admission was very affordable, and the trip itself was exactly the right length. The atmosphere there was amazing — you could really feel the history around you. My guide made it even better with how knowledgeable he was about Thermopylae and Greek history overall, while also being super friendly and accommodating. A great experience for those interested on military history. There were two of us in the group and th driver engaged with us sharing his knowledge about Thermopyle and the battles that preceded and followed it. He also described points of interest along the way. The museum is small and fee, which wasn't included was 3 Euros, so no issue, but have the correct amount ready. The lunch stop was a great spot, with amazing views of the Aegean and nearby islands. Excellent for enthusiasts.

It's difficult to review this fairly. Our driver was pleasant, friendly and helpful, and an excellent, safe driver. However, Thermopylae itself is not a good day out. The 'museum' has almost nothing in it bar a 3D film explaining the battle quite well - for an extra EU3 each! The two monuments are impressive, but other than that, there is nothing to see at the battlefield site. The hot springs 'spa' is just a hydrothermal spring and waterfall. As it was the middle of winter we did not bring our swimming gear, but there was plenty of time had we wanted to sit in the hot sulphurous water
