Don’t miss Skye!

This wasn’t our first Rabbie’s tour, and James was an excellent guide and driver. We loved all we got to see that this tour made possible. And thanks to James, it was also fun and educational.

Two Extraordinary Days in the Scottish Highlands

My wife Diana and I traveled from New York to Scotland to celebrate our 8th wedding anniversary, staying at Bunchrew House Hotel just outside Inverness. After booking the NC500 and Scottish Highlands Adventure tour, we had such an exceptional experience that we went back to the Rabbies website that same evening and booked the Isle of Skye, Loch Ness and Eilean Donan Castle tour for the very next day. We did not know we would have the same guide again. When we saw Ryan at the pickup point by Inverness Cathedral the following morning, we genuinely cheered. That reaction tells you everything you need to know about how the first day had gone. Ryan: A Once in a Generation Guide Where do we even begin? Ryan is not just a great tour guide. He is a once in a generation talent at what he does, and Rabbies should know how lucky they are to have him representing their brand. What struck us most on the second day was that Ryan showed up with an entirely new repertoire. Different jokes, different historical threads, different fun facts woven into a completely different landscape. Not a single story was repeated from the day before. For a guide who drives these routes regularly, that level of freshness and preparation is remarkable. It told us that Ryan does not run on autopilot. He is genuinely engaged with every group, every day, and he tailors the experience to the people on the bus. His range of knowledge is nothing short of extraordinary. Across both days he covered Scottish and United Kingdom history, geology, topography, agriculture, clan battles, Viking origins embedded in Skye's place names, Gaelic cultural heritage, weather, sports, music, movies and pop culture. He connected all of it into a coherent narrative that made every stop feel like the next chapter in a story he was telling across the whole day. On the Skye tour he wove together the history connected to Eilean Donan Castle, the geological forces that created the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing over millions of years and the cultural identity that makes this island unlike anywhere else in the world. But it was never a lecture. That is the key thing about Ryan. He has a gift for reading the room and knowing when to educate, when to entertain and when to simply let the landscape speak for itself. His timing with humor is genuinely sharp. His jokes were not the forced variety you sometimes get from guides working through a rehearsed script. They landed naturally, were often self-deprecating and had the whole bus laughing in a way that broke down any barriers between strangers sharing a van for the day. By the time we reached Portree for lunch, the group felt like old friends. By the time we were gazing at the Quiraing together, people were sharing cameras, pointing out details to one another and spontaneously exchanging contact information. Ryan created that atmosphere. He has an instinct for making people feel welcome, seen and included in something memorable. We also want to note how impressive Ryan's driving was across both days. The roads on the Isle of Skye are narrow and winding and demand full attention. Ryan handled them with complete calm while maintaining his commentary and keeping spirits high throughout an 11 to 12 hour day. Not once did we feel unsafe or anxious. He knew every restroom stop, the best places to eat at every village, hidden beaches, secret viewpoints and little local details that no guidebook would ever capture. He got us back to Inverness right on time both days, which on a tour of this length and complexity is a genuine achievement. Rabbies, please take care of Ryan. He is a treasure! The Isle of Skye Tour Itself The Isle of Skye tour is a different kind of experience from the NC500 day and it is worth explaining why both are worth doing even on consecutive days. The NC500 tour gave us rugged, remote Highland landscapes, secret beaches, ancient ruins and the feeling of real wilderness. The Skye tour delivered something more dramatic and cinematic. The early 8am departure meant we made the most of every hour. The stop at Loch Ness was perfectly timed, just long enough to take in the scale and mystique of the legendary loch. Eilean Donan Castle was a genuine highlight. Even from the shoreline, the setting is so iconic that it stopped us in our tracks. We chose to go inside and found it well worth the optional entry fee. Ryan had given us just enough historical context beforehand to make the visit far richer than it would have been on our own. Portree for lunch was a wonderful stop. The harbor is charming, the village feels genuinely local rather than tourist-saturated and Ryan's restaurant recommendation did not disappoint. The afternoon on the Trotternish Peninsula was where the day became truly transcendent. The Quiraing is something we struggle to describe to people back home. Photographs do not do it justice. Standing at the viewpoint looking out over those tilted rock formations and the vast moorland below, with the Atlantic in the distance, felt like being inside a painting too dramatic to be real. The Old Man of Storr, visible from miles around, is similarly awe-inspiring. Ryan explained the geology and local legends associated with both and gave them a depth that made them feel like far more than photo opportunities. The final stretch through Kyleakin and back across the mainland through Wester Ross and past Loch Carron was a beautiful wind-down. Even in the early evening light, the scenery through those Highland passes was stunning and Ryan kept the stories going all the way back to Inverness. A Few Practical Tips for Future Travelers Dress in warm layers even in late June, as the wind on the Trotternish Peninsula can be cutting. Wear comfortable walking shoes as some viewpoints involve uneven terrain. Bring a wide-angle lens if you have one, because the landscapes are so vast that a phone camera sometimes cannot capture the full scale. And bring snacks for the longer stretches between stops. Our Final Word If you are visiting Inverness and wondering whether to book one of these tours or both, our answer is emphatically both. They complement each other perfectly, covering different kinds of Scottish landscape and history, and together they give you a genuinely comprehensive experience of the Highlands and Islands that you cannot replicate by renting a car and going on your own. The storytelling, the community built on the bus and the sheer quality of guiding that Rabbies delivers through someone like Ryan adds a dimension that independent travel simply cannot match. We came to Scotland to celebrate our anniversary and these two days gave us memories we will carry for the rest of our lives. We will be recommending Rabbies to every friend and family member who mentions Scotland for years to come. Thank you for an anniversary we will never forget.

Not the best experience

Our experience would have been so much better if the weather was nicer. It was cloudy, raining, cold and windy, we did not get to see much of the scenery of the Isle of Skye, definitely did not see the rock formations. Also, we would have preferred a more mature driver. Nick showed up late, he is intelligent and knowledge but would take long pauses in the middle of a sentence. We weren't sure if he forgot what he was saying or distracted by the traffic. He was often impatient and critical of the drivers in front of him. During our 1 hour time at the castle Nick went for a run, then showed up back at the van late, sweating in his shorts and t-shirt, highly unprofessional. We didn't realize we would have to pay a hefty fee to enter the castle. We ended up touring the grounds which also cost money. We were disappointed with how the day went.

Operatörens svar

Hello, Thank you for your review. We're sorry to hear that the weather was not on your side on your Isle of Skye tour. It can be pretty miserable weather up there, and I understand how it can negatively impact your overall experience. The gloomy weather can make the scenery more dramatic, but it seems like it just hid the key sights for you, and that must have been disappointing. Eilean Donan Castle's visit is an optional attraction that isn't included in the price of this tour as advertised on the tour page, I'm sorry that this came as a surprise to you on the day. We're taking your feedback on board about your driver-guide, and we'd love to do a bigger investigation so it can be addressed more specifically. We expect polite and proper conduct from our teams at all times, and it’s disappointing and very worrying to receive a complaint regarding impatient or distracting driving. If you wish to provide us with more details about your experience, along with your booking reference, in order for us to raise your concerns, please contact our team at feedback@rabbies.com. Best regards, Camille

A wonderful day…highly recommend!

This is a full day tour leaving at 8a and returning around 8p. The weather was perfect to see so many breathtaking views. The Isle of Skye is well worth it and we appreciated NOT being the driver on the one lane roads! Our driver Scottie was informative and entertaining. There are ample food stops and bathroom breaks!!

Isle of Skye was a vibe

I think a good tour guide can make an adventure better. Nick our driver and tour guide kept us safe, and kept us laughing. Never felt rushed at the stops. We did the one day tour of Skye from Inverness, and I felt it was definitely worth the money.
