Kathakali bildas i slutet av 1500-talet och det är en form av ritualdansdrama. Denna klassiska konstform kom från de gamla konstformerna kallade Krishnattom och Ramanattom. Kathakali betyder "berättelse genom pantomime". Skådespelarna talar inte - föreställningarna är helt baserade på ansiktsuttryck, rörelser och gester från skådespelarna. Att använda Kathakali-make-up är en långsam omvandling av skådespelarna från dödliga varelser till odödliga gudomligheter och demoner. Denna metamorfos äger rum framför publiken och tar cirka 2 - 3 timmar tills skådespelarna är helt klädda och målade. (Minst 2 personer krävs. Ej giltigt mellan 15 december och 10 januari)

It was an interesting experience. As others have said, don't go too early. The actual performance is only 20min. It is good but not for everyone.

The Kathakali show was a wonderful cultural experience and a great introduction to Kerala’s classical performing arts. The brief explanation before the show helped in understanding the gestures and characters, especially for first-time viewers. Watching a Kathakali show was an unforgettable experience and a wonderful introduction to Kerala’s rich cultural heritage. Even without understanding the language, the storytelling was clear and emotionally engaging, thanks to the expressive acting and live traditional music. The explanations given before or during the performance really helped in understanding the meaning behind the gestures and characters, making the experience even more enjoyable. Thoroughly enjoyed the show. The actors and musician were superb, I can’t recommend it highly enough. It was also wonderful seeing the transformation as they put their makeup on.

Be sure to look, preferably be there 1 hour beforehand to watch the make-up. Super great experience and absolutely impressive. Room is air conditioned, preferably take a light scarf or cardigan. Water (sealed bottle) is quite cheap to buy.
