I feel sorry for all the animals who look terribly lonely & depressed in their small enclosures

It's free. We were at the aquarium today and there was a huge line of prams next to the main entrance. So if you can, leave the pram at home. The aquarium itself is very tired and dated, and is in desperate need of an update. Some of the animals look quite sad in their small enclosures such as the ones for the penguins and the crocodile. They are very unnatural enclosures. They need to put the animals back into their natural habitat out in the wild. The entire layout is quite confusing too. It doesn't flow well. It's dark, old facilities, tired, a maze of corridors and very limited staff around the place to help you out. Yes, it's a good educational experience for young kids but I'd recommemd spending your money on other activities like going to Healesville sanctuary or Werribee Open Range Zoo instead. The gift shop was cramped, a maze just to get out of it and it's also the exit to Sea Life. Terrible design, stuffed full of plush toys and overpriced tourist souvenirs.

Don't go there on the weekend.

Way over crowded and they just keep letting them in. Not an enjoyable experience at all 😕

A lot of fun for kids

This is a big improvement since I last visited about 5 years ago. Seems to be a lot more fish, sharks etc. The penguins have also moved from being the first thing you see to the last. I feel their enclosure is now far too small given how many are in there, otherwise I would’ve given 5 stars. My hot tip is to buy the tickets as a “Melbourne experience” with the legoland tickets as it is much cheaper. We took our 4 year old and she loved it. The shop at the end is way too pricey compared to Melbourne zoo shop prices.

Dirty, unkempt, rubbish everywhere. Lack of attention and care.

I visited there yesterday afternoon from 3pm - 5pm The exhibits were fantastic, great diverse range of animals, layout and pathway to follow easy and straightforward. What I didn’t like was: way too many people in there. Do they monitor the amount of people coming in and out so it’s not too crowded? I mean the rush and the pushing and the chaos to get out at 5pm was insane, not only as an adult but especially when you have a neurodivergent teenager (14) having a melt down because of the crowds, the lack of direction, attention and even acknowledgment from staff or anyone in charge was disappointing to say the least. The cafe was disgusting, one person serving, therefore excessive wait times. A grumpy rude attendant who grunted that they were closed and could only get drinks from fridge. Where was the sign and where was the other attendant? It’s school holidays shouldn’t there be extra staff on? And speaking about extra staff: where were that extra staff to clean the cafe as the day goes on? It’s school holidays shouldn’t they have had extra staff on to cater for the extra people? It was so dirty. Rubbish and food everywhere , on tables, on floor, no where really to sit even though there was because there was rubbish/ food everywhere. And the rubbish was not only in the cafe. There was rubbish scattered all over the aquarium. Do they not have someone who goes through and checks? And collects the rubbish? And the toilets, urgh they were just as bad. Didn’t look like they had been checked or cleaned all day! Sealife aquarium really need to ‘up your game’. Incredibly disappointed. The negatives we experienced has completely put us off ever visiting here again. When I visited here 9yrs ago with the same child (5 yrs old) it was clean, enjoyable, not insanely crowded and we had a wonderful time. The negatives outweigh the positives and we unfortunately will not visit again whilst here on holidays. I hope you read and take everything on board and improve your service and facilities for families, children and others. Kind regards

Heartbreaking Penguin Exhibit and Poor Value for Money

I was deeply disappointed, particularly by the penguin exhibit. The enclosure appeared extremely confined, with very little opportunity for the penguins to engage in what I would consider natural swimming behaviour. Several penguins appeared unusually motionless and understimulated, which I found distressing to witness. The water also appeared dirty, and the overall exhibit felt dark and artificial, with no apparent natural light. Whether or not these conditions meet welfare standards, as a visitor I left feeling genuinely concerned for the animals’ wellbeing. Beyond the penguin exhibit, the overall experience felt far more like a commercial theme park than a conservation or educational institution. Also, much of the signage and educational content felt simplistic, low fidelity and cheaply produced. I genuinely thought it was possibly made with AI. Unlike attractions owned by the Government such as the Melbourne Museum, Sealife is privately operated and needs to be profitable, the balance felt skewed toward maximising revenue and I felt ripped off due to the high admission costs. Considering the cost of admission, I don’t feel the experience represented good value for money. I brought my partner expecting a cute weekend date around learning about marine life and supporting conservation, but instead we left feeling disappointed and, in the case of the penguin exhibit, deeply saddened.

Marvellous Melbourne Aquarium!

Melbourne aquarium always has so much to see and do. We loved all the exhibits, especially the penguins, but it's a shame that they don't have the big tank to swim in at the moment (not sure if the aquarium are fixing it?)

A peaceful underwater journey in the heart of Melbourne.

SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium is one of those places where I can easily spend hours. I visited during the working week, Monday to Friday, and for me this is the best time to come: it felt peaceful, quiet, and not overcrowded. The visit feels like a slow walk through different underwater worlds. I especially loved the colourful coral displays, the bright tropical fish, the delicate seahorses, and the beautiful movement of marine life under the blue aquarium light. Some tanks feel almost meditative — you just stand there and watch the colours, shapes, and quiet rhythm of the water. There is something here for every age. Families with children will enjoy the interactive zones, but it is also a lovely place to visit solo or with friends. The aquarium includes many different areas, such as Penguin Playground, Ocean Invaders, Night on the Reef, Rocky Shores, Rainforest Creatures, shark displays, seahorses and cuttlefish, and the new saltwater crocodile exhibit with Coowonga. I also enjoyed the variety beyond the ocean exhibits. The Rainforest Creatures area gives visitors a chance to see animals such as lizards, turtles, frogs, mudskippers and Green Tree Pythons, while the shark displays include species such as Grey Nurse Sharks, Port Jackson Sharks and Necklace Carpet Sharks. The Rocky Shores area is also a lovely addition, giving a closer look at small rockpool creatures and shoreline life. The penguins are always a highlight — funny, charming and full of personality. The seahorses were another favourite of mine: delicate, unusual and almost magical to watch. Overall, SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium is a must-visit attraction in Melbourne. It is educational, relaxing, beautiful and suitable for all ages. I would happily return again, especially on a quiet weekday when you can enjoy the exhibits slowly and peacefully.

A wonderful self paced experience for all ages!

It was a magical experience learning and exploring the different creatures that live in the water. A self paced experience where you could spend hours just watching the wonders of the fish. Very open floorplan, so you never feel crowded. The staff are passionate about their work and the creatures they care for. It was a pleasure to speak with Milo during the Jellyfish experience that Sea Life Melbourne offers. Very sociable and kind!
