På 70-talet av 1900-talet ville arkitekter skapa gästvänliga bostadsområden med deltagande av invånarna och andra användare som svar på den storskaliga och en grå modernismen av arkitekturen i återuppbyggnaden efter andra världskriget.
2011 organiserade Rotterdams kommun det första stadsinitiativet, ett administrativt instrument för att stimulera administrativ innovation och medborgardeltagande. Invånarna i Rotterdam uppmanades att lämna in projekt som skulle ge liv till staden och förbättra livskvaliteten i staden. Ett belopp på 4 miljoner har avsatts från stadssatsningen för att genomföra projektet.

före andra världskriget fanns ingen centralstation, utan det fanns fyra stationer runt centrum. 1957 invigdes centralstationen på sin nuvarande plats. 2004 påbörjades en totalrenovering av centralstationen, 2014 levererades nuvarande slutresultat. Den gamla stationen klarade inte längre passagerartillströmningen.
Laurenskerk är den enda kvarlevan av Rotterdams medeltida centrum. Laurenskerk är en korsning mellan en hallkyrka (alla byggnader lika höga) och en korsformad basilika (här är sidotornen lägre än huvudtornet). Kyrkan byggdes mellan 1449 och 1525.
Markthals inre fasad är täckt med ett 11 000 m² (två fotbollsplaner) konstverk av Arno Coenen och Iris Roskam, med titeln Hoorn des Overvloeds. Denna titel hänvisar till Cornucopia, ett horn från grekisk mytologi som symboliserar överflöd och mättnad. Konstverket visar kraftigt förstorade frukter, grönsaker, spannmål, fiskar, blommor och insekter. I bakgrunden kan du också se Laurenskerk med torn.
På medeltiden, en av de 10 stadsportar som Rotterdam hade här. På 30-talet växte staden Rotterdam snabbt och porten stod i vägen, då man ville ha ett bättre flöde för den ökande trafiken. Man beslutade att flytta porten cirka 100 meter (en rivning av porten mötte stort motstånd). Under bombdådet i andra världskriget skadades porten allvarligt, ett år efter bombningen revs porten, eftersom den inte längre kunde göras färdig. Några prydnadsverk från den gamla porten sparades och införlivades i väggarna i byggnaderna i hörnet av rådhustorget.
Inte mycket av den historiska stadskärnan har förblivit intakt under andra världskriget, men Oude Haven är lyckligtvis en av de historiska platser som har bevarats. I hamnen ligger historiska charmiga gamla båtar, medan på kajerna hittar du en färgsprakande blandning av byggnader.
Det vita huset byggdes 1889 och med en höjd av 43 meter den första skyskrapan i Belgien, Nederländerna och Luxemburg.
För närvarande är mötet en av hotspots i Rotterdam. Det finns många kaféer, matställen och klädbutiker. Det är också en gata där det handlar lite om att se och bli sedd.

We had an absolutely wonderful time on our recent tour of Rotterdam! Jamal was a phenomenal guide from start to finish. Not only was he incredibly professional and punctual, but his deep knowledge of the city proved just how intelligent and passionate he is about its history and culture. What really set the experience apart, though, was his sense of humor. Jamal is incredibly funny and kept us entertained and engaged throughout the entire tour. We were able to set the start time for our tour & when we met Jess, she was able to customise what we wanted to see & do. Jess contacted us the night before to confirm our tour/time/meeting point & that morning, she gave us more specifics & was on time. Jess’ English was impeccable! She had so much knowledge & was able to give us a personal touch. What was included was just enough to get a Dutch experience including riding the metro & trams, sampling Dutch fries, going through the cube apts, walking through the old port, seeing various architectures building etc. We couldn’t have asked for more. What a treat it was!

We enjoyed this walking tour with Jess as she gave us a good amount of Rotterdam history. She met us at the port and also brought us back with a few train rides and a good deal of walking along the way. We made a stop for coffee/latte, however there was no lunch or street food as advertised when we booked. The tour took about 4 hours.

the tour guide arrived over 15 min late and told us he lost his bag on the subway with his wallet, keys, and tickets. He could not take us on the tour. He left and came back 1/2 hr later saying that he accepted his fate and could start the tour but would extend 1 hr later than planned. We were very disappointed and did not get the tour. we called viator to ask for our money back. the local tour company did not answer their phone- we had hoped that they could send a replacement .

This was an extremely rare and unforeseen situation. Our guide unfortunately lost his bag on the metro while traveling to the meeting point. Despite the stress of losing his wallet, keys, and personal belongings, he came to meet your group, explained the situation transparently, and asked whether a short delay would be acceptable while he contacted the public transport company's Lost & Found service. After returning within the agreed timeframe, he was fully prepared to conduct your private tour and even offered to extend it by an additional hour so you would still receive the complete experience. Unfortunately, by then your group had decided not to continue. We also apologize that you were unable to reach us by phone. We missed Viator's call and immediately tried calling back, but were unable to get through the automated phone system. Jamal was worth a 5 star review for personality & knowledge. Really a great guide. Only reason for 4 star was that the tour was to include a street food lunch which we didn't get. There ended up being 8 of our friends that joined our group.

Mo was our guide and he was incredible. We knew very little about the city and learned so much. The tour was perfect for us. We had an infant with us and the timing and Mo, our guide, was a perfect fit. The tour size gave us time and attention to ask questions and not feel rushed.
