Ett besök i 1100-talets basilikan San Clemente avslöjar en glittrande guldmosaik ovanför den centrala absiden. St. Clements förvandlades under århundraden från ett privat hem som var platsen för en hemlig kristen dyrkan under det första århundradet till en imponerande basilika. Vad som låg under basilikan var okänt fram till 1860, då översvämningar ledde en irländsk dominikansk romersk-katolsk präst och arkeolog in i nivåerna under basilikans golv. Utgrävningar pågår. Idag kan du gå ner till 100 fot under jorden över tre nivåer. På den första nivån hittar vi en basilika från 300-talet, länge glömd efter byggandet av basilikan från 1100-talet ovanför. Nedanför hittar du resterna av ett gammalt hedniskt Mitraic-tempel. Lägre fortfarande, ruiner av antika romerska hem.

What a great tour! Gianluca was a wonderful guide who mixed a deep level of knowledge with a good sense of humor. He really brought the history alive and helped us understand the wonder of the “lasagna church.” Highly recommend!!

This was spectacular. Our guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and genuinely cared about the material. He was patient with question and his enthusiasm made this a very much enjoyable experience. He even helped us get a taxi in the end and waited for the taxi to arrive.

We had an amazing underground tour of the Basilica of San Clemente with Eddy! He was incredibly energetic, engaging, and knowledgeable throughout the entire experience. His enthusiasm for the history and archaeology of the site made the tour both educational and fun. We found the tour a little long many stairs but we're able to relax in the gardens which we did after before heading back to our hotel thankyou for the experience worth the trip
