Byggt mellan mitten av 1100-talet och den sista fjärdedelen av 1200-talet på ruinerna av det antika Tabularium, från 1144 var det säte för Roms kommun och dess högsta representant: senatorn, ansvarig för rättskipningen och medborgarnas intressen. Huvudfasaden på 1200-talspalatset öppnade sig mot den framtida Piazza del Campidoglio med en serie loggier med runda bågar arrangerade på tre nivåer. I rummet på första våningen, där senatorns hov låg, var tegelbågarna avbrutna av återvunna gamla kolonner med joniska versaler från 1200-talets första fjärdedel. En stor off-center båge till höger om fasaden markerade huvudentrén från torget.

Not only was the tour absolutely stunning, but my family and I were provided with a flawless guide, Emilio Del Gesso. He was more than kind as he answered all of our questions with patience and anticipation for the next one; visibly enjoyed every minute of walking through everything with us and explaining all of the details of each piece, their symbolism, and the history behind it as well as its creators; was extremely friendly and hilarious, putting a smile on our faces; and had greater patience whenever we would ask to go back to view something. I recommend this tour to anyone interested in the Capitoline museums, dynamic views of Rome, or/and a riveting tour of art, history, and culture.

Our tour with Emilio was exceptional. We learned SO much about each piece that we saw, we felt like we were real art history students! The Capitoline Museums are a must-do, and if you really want a deep dive into the significance, history and meaning behind each piece you see, Emilio is a must-have tour guide. Excellent tour with Emilio. Very informative and knowledgeable. Gained a great understanding of antiquities as compared to renaissance and medieval sculpture.
The museum is amazing with many famous ancient sculptures. They also had a fair amount of Renaissance paintings. At the end, the view of the Forum was outstanding. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about ancient history and art history, and added a great deal to the tour that we would have overlooked. He paced it well. There were a lot of stairs to climb. Strongly recommend this visit with guided tour.

This tour was great. It was our first tour in Rome and set a high expectation. Tour guide was friendly and very knowledgeable.
Martin was the smartest guide I have ever taken a tour with. He quickly ascertained my level of education and interest and took me on a Masters level course of the Capitoline Museums. We covered not just the usual stories about statues and paintings someone could easily learn from YouTube, but deep and insightful discussions about the period of the creation of the works as well as fascinating background tidbits that blew my mind. Martin's tour challenged me intellectually in a good way. Make sure you are ready both physically and mentally for this tour. This is the tour for true history (and art history) buffs.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about paintings. We however, are not. Very long tour for the size of the museum. The price is not equal to the value. What our guide showcased in his love of art, he lacked in people skills, although he did try. Just a bit awkward. If you are an art student or very much into art history, this is for you. If you are a casual tourist wanting to emerse yourself in all things Rome, I’d skip this. $541 for 3 people was just not worth it.
