This was an absolute highlight of our trip! The setting could not be more beautiful: mountains in the background and gorgeous grasses and ponds. The horses were well-trained and our guide Deidre was super knowledgeable and indulged all of our questions. We saw so much wildlife and Deidre made sure we got great photos and some fun facts as well!
Time for Blake’s horse ride with Deirdré Amy Gower- we are armed with carrots and apples for Moon and the rest of the horsey family. Horse Rides at Pete’s is a popular horseback safari experience near Stellenbosch, located on the R304 in Koelenhof. Riders can explore a 240-hectare wildlife sanctuary and see animals such as giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, springbok, kudu, eland, and gemsbok from horseback. No previous riding experience is required.

Pete’s Horse Safari was incredible from start to finish. Riding horses right alongside giraffes felt surreal and truly magical. The safari is perfect for beginner riders. The scenery is breathtaking, and we saw so many animals along the way.
We had a wonderful horse ride with Deirdré and her team! The horses are great and the wildlife sanctuary is beautiful. During the ride we came across all sorts of animals including different kinds of antelopes, zebras and giraffes. We can warmly recommend Horse Rides at Pete’s and will return as soon as possible!
I had never have gone horseback riding before this tour but thanks to the explanation I had gotten and the gentle horses they have had a great experience. The giraffes, springboks, zebras and other wild live come close to you zo you can see them beautifully in the natural habitats. The guide was very knowledgeable about all the wildlife and explained about how they are protecting these animals so they can survive for year to come.
Would 100% recommend horse riding wildlife safari when visiting this region of south Africa. Came with my dad who has no experience riding and all of the horses were so calm and well trained. Our guide was so lovely and matched us with horses based on riding experience. All horses looked really excellently cared for and super comfortable in the reserve. We spent over and hour riding the horses around the reserve whilst our guide led from the back giving a guided commentary of the animals we could see and her knowledge of the animals and wildlife in the area was really good! We were in a really small group with three riders and our guide which was really good as everyone was able to listen and hear her whilst still being able to observe and enjoy th surrounding area. We were super fortunate to see both baby giraffe, zebra and water buck; along with spring bok and lots of native bird species (some of which are protected species). I would highly recommend this experience for beginner riders who would like the south African safari experience, and we were able to get so close to the animals it was a truly remarkable activity. The price is without a doubt worth it as you can see how well the horses are cared for and loved, and they really enjoy what they do.
Me and my 2 children (11 and 15) made the ride into this magnificent nature. We saw a lot of animals, and felt like we were in the middle of the savannah. It was a very great experience with the children!
We are far from experienced riders and felt safe and in control during the ride through the sanctuary. The highlight had to be the two baby giraffe who were adorable. Experiencing the animals from the back of a horse was a precious experience that will not be forgotten. The guide was knowledgeable about the animals and shared the philosophy behind the park. The drop of a star was due to the wine tasting experience as there was little shared about the wines in terms of background or tasting notes
The safari should definitely have been done. The experience on a horse, seeing other animals was just awesome. The other animals take you as animal was and the zebras, giraffes etc. Were therefore so close to us 😍 The horses are happy and very well maintained. The local staff are true gold treasures, so loving and friendly. A must have on the trip!!!
