This is not a sleazy place despite being in the Red Light district. It starts with a short film of a skimpily dressed dancer moving around but you are given a guide on a lanyard to point at various places on the walls to hear stories of former prostitutes. There is also a multiple choice quiz about facts on prostitution that definitely surprise (and shock) you. They have a gift shop at the end of the trip in the shop and you can also pose at a window then buy your prints in the gift shop.
Very thoughtful museum, informing well about life behind the windows as well as the risky. It is a small museum so you are fairly fast through.
The narrative in the audios was the most fascinating part of the visit! Real stories and real language. Don't miss the tablets with the questions. You discover many "secrets" there! Thank you Ioanna for welcoming us and guiding us through the process!
This is a museum in an old brothel and it’s well worth visiting! It’s new, so there are some flaws, but overall, it’s terrific. You actually visit rooms that were once used as well as plenty of artifacts: items left behind, sex toys, a sling, etc. There’s a small tribute of women who have passed away as well. The last room is a shop, but no one was there when I entered the room and I had to return the audio guide to the front when I’d gone out the exit door, but overall, it was a definite must-see. This is an important part of their history and as important as the marvelous Erotic Museum down the street!
Very interesting to learn about the red light district! Recommend going to see while in Amsterdam.
We thought this was interesting and quirky. The audio story from Ing was good to add colour to each room. Took us about 20mins to go through. My youngest child was 16 and it was probably a bit much for her, but the rest of us found it really interesting.
Pepe was marvelous. Very friendly.
There was some interesting information gained through this museum. However, it was kinda small and super quick to get through. It also didn’t feel like there was much to actually look at. It was mainly just listening to the audio.
The tour is not about the history of the red light district but about how to be a prostitute and serving clients in different ways. The audio was very graphic and the advertisement is misleading. I am requesting a refund. I would not have selected this excursion as it was misleading.
This museum is located in a former brothel and limits how many people can enter at a time since many of the rooms are quite small. Admission includes an audio guide (in multiple languages) that is fairly good. It includes lots of commentary from a former Russian prostitute named Inga. Her accent can be challenging at times to understand all her words but it was great to hear directly from someone working in the profession. There are two videos shown during the visit in different places. Both are very interesting and are looped to automatically restart if you come in during the showing. Signage is in both Dutch and English, and provided us more information about the prostitution industry than we had expected.
Dear guest, Thank you for your thoughtful review and for taking the time to share your experience. It’s nice to read that you found the museum informative and enjoyed the audio guide, videos, and personal stories. We’re also happy that the exhibition gave you more insight into this unique part of Amsterdam’s history than you expected. We hope to welcome you again. Kind regards
