Monumentet byggdes av kejsaren Hadrian (117-138 e.Kr.) tillsammans med Aelius-bron framför den för att bli ett mausoleum för sig själv och för hans efterträdare. Under århundraden blev det den defensiva vallen av Vatikanstaten, platsen för en garnison, ett fängelse, men också kontor för Vatikanskontoret och arkivet. Idag kan slottets inre besöks med dess sjuttonde århundrade rika frescohaller (Hall of Apollo, Hall of Paolina dekorerad med berättelserna om Alexander den stora, Hall of Perseus med avsnitt om myten om den grekiska hjälten, Room of Amore och Psiche), fängelserna, samlingen av antika vapen, måleriet (med verk av Carlo Crivelli, Luca Signorelli och Dosso Dossi), samlingen av gamla kulor, keramik och skulpturer. Terrassen erbjuder en av de bästa panoramautsikten över det historiska centret.

We spent a beautiful afternoon discovering particular corners and knowing secrets and compelling stories and a thank you goes to Vincenzo that mel tell her really amazed us.
We took a tour of Castel Sant’Angelo and Palazzo Farnese with Vincenzo, a guide who is now one of the strong points of every escape to Rome. This time the visit to Castel Sant’Angelo, which apparently is not one of the most attractive monuments in the capital, proved to be the scene of a lesson in history, architecture, life and death, paganism and Christianity. The Farnese palace then was the gem that made the weekend unforgettable. If you visit anything in Rome, the enthusiasm of Vincenzo Spina gives you half the joy.
This was a fabulous tour. Vincent was able to bring the history alive with his great storytelling skills. The Castle was beautiful on its own, but the tour was so worthwhile.
Castel Sant’Angelo is a must-visit when in Rome. This historic fortress, originally built as Emperor Hadrian’s mausoleum, is rich in history and architecture, with fascinating exhibits throughout. Walking through its ramparts and corridors, you get a real sense of Rome’s past, from ancient times to the Renaissance. The highlight is the terrace, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the Vatican, perfect for photos. The museum is well laid out, informative, and engaging for visitors of all ages. A memorable experience combining history, art, and spectacular vistas. Definitely worth a visit when exploring Rome!
