Otaru-kanalen är en klassisk bas när det kommer till berömda sightseeingplatser i Hokkaido. En gång var Hokkaidos distributionsnav, den stoltserade med en befolkning som till och med överträffade Sapporos. På den tiden användes kanalen för att lossa fartyg via pråmar och skapades för att förlänga avståndet som gods kunde distribueras. Så småningom var kanalen inte längre nödvändig för att fylla sin funktion när dockorna väl var etablerade och skulle deponeras. Men det står för närvarande som en plats för både medborgare och turister att koppla av och njuta med sina promenadstråk och gaslampor som lyser upp flodstranden.
Otaru Citys historiska byggnader från tidigt 1900-tal används nu som olika resurser för turism. Otaru Art Base som ligger mittemot Otaru-kanalen tvärs över Rinkosen Street är en sådan anläggning. Det finns fyra historiska byggnader där 20 av de största bankerna i Hokkaido var samlade, tidigare centrum för Hokkaidos ekonomi känd som "North Wall Street". Det som var den tidigare Hokkaido Takushoku Bank Otaru-grenen som ses på bilden är nu hem för Nitori Museum of Art, och inkluderar utställningar som japanska och utländska målningar, träsniderier och mer. I källaren hittar du Art Nouveau Art Déco Glass Gallery.
Om du reser för nöjes skull, kommer du att vilja njuta av gourmet och shopping. Båda kan göras på Otarus Sakaimachi Dori Shopping Street, som ligger på insidan av Rinkosen Street, parallellt med Otaru-kanalen. Det är en enkelriktad gata som sträcker sig cirka 900 meter från North Wall Street till Marchen Crossroads där du hittar Bank of Japan Otaru Branch. Båda sidorna av gatan kantas av gamla köpmän och byggnader i västerländsk stil. I närheten av Otaru-kanalen är det en annan mycket populär turistplats.
Otaru kan vara känt för sitt nostalgiska inflytande från historiska västerländska byggnader och glashantverk, men det finns också en plats som förmedlar Japans historia från länge sedan. En av dessa platser är Tanaka Sake Brewery, som grundades 1899. Många typer av alkoholhaltiga drycker tillverkas här, inklusive plommonvin, söt sake, och naturligtvis den älskade lokala sake av Otaru, Takaragawa. Mt Tengu Ropeway kan ta dig från foten av berget till toppen, en total sträcka på 735 meter, på cirka 4 minuter. Från bergstoppen kan du till och med få en fantastisk utsikt över Shakotanhalvön.

This was our first day in Japan and our guide was wonderful! She had beautiful English and had a lot of little tidbits of knowledge about Otaru and navigating around Japan in general. She was a delight! We saw so much and learned a little as well. It was a wonderful day.

Our guide, Fumiko Yoshizawa was delightful. It was a particularly cold day and she brought us hand warmers which was so very thoughtful. Clearly Fumiko loves her city and loves sharing it with visitors. She contacted us several times before the tour to ensure when and where to meet her. She took us to a local restaurant that we would not have found on our own and guided us to try dishes we probably would not have tried without her encouragement. The food was delicious. She took us to several places and gave us rest periods as needed. She is a great tour guide.

Bad tour. Waste of money. I could not understand the guide. His English was terrible. Really nothing to see, except shops to spend money on stuff I don’t want or need.

It was disappointing to learn that the museum we had originally planned to close was closed, but he quickly suggested the Otaru General Museum. There, we learned about the history of Otaru while listening to the guide. We met our guide, Mr. Yakuwa, for the first time in the lobby of the hotel where we were going to stay, and he was a dandy man about the same age as us, so we were able to ask him to guide us with peace of mind. At a sushi restaurant that Mr. Hakkuwa had booked in advance for lunch, we had a good meal. After that, the half day was full of shopping in Sakaimachi street, exploring the canal, and enjoying delicious sweets as a break. Thank you very much. As a side note, our dinner was undecided, but the beer restaurant that our guide told us about just before we parted was great in terms of atmosphere and taste.
