Great tour of Oaxaca City Center with markets, street walks and history. Bought some mezcal along the way whilst doing tastings in the market. Yuvia was a great guide, recommended tour!
My guide Israel was passionate and knowledgeable. I enjoyed the discussions we had as well as his intimate experience with the local markets and architectural highlights.
This was a really bad tour. We booked a tour in English and the guide did not speak English. More importantly, he gave almost no information about the town or its history. He did not have answers to any of our questions. I consider this to have been a waste of my time and money. My husband felt the same way. I contacted the tour operator to ask for a refund but they only offered me another tour.
The young Caesar who attended us had the best disposition. At all times he was very friendly. However, he still lacks experience. You have to polish your English a little, but above all, you have to study more about the places we are visiting in order to answer the questions of the walkers with security and depth. For example, in the market, you have to know well what moles are made of. You have to know the exact historical dates and know fun facts about the characters you talk about. I recommend you start studying a little every day so that you gradually know everything about the city.
Sadly, this tour was the lowest, most disappointing moment of my trip to Oaxaca City. I walked 35-40 min from my Airbnb…through some difficult street navigation and in the heat…to the meeting spot — a church that had no sign or name anywhere (inside or outside!) to assure me that I was in the right location. I was in the right location (which took some checking and asking others to verify). The meeting time was 5:00 pm; I arrived @ 4:45. After waiting until 5:15 or so, and receiving no text via WhatsApp or any other communication, I started texting the host. Finally, at 5:30, I received a reply that his cell phone had died, he was sorry, the tour was canceled, etc. I was very sorry too! I wish there had been another way that he could have communicated with me so I did not waste over two hours total of my afternoon with waiting and wondering. One of my wonderings was: Where is everyone else who signed up for the tour? Did he really cancel because he didn’t have any other people sign up? Suggestions — 1) Choose a different meeting spot that is easier for a first-time visitor to find (a meeting point with clear signs and in a safer, less crowded area); and 2) Have a backup plan on how to communicate with your tour participants in case of a loss of communication (like a dead cell phone). I did get a full refund, but this experience has tainted my confidence in booking another tour on Viator.
I’m unsure if this was his first time leading a tour solo or he was covering for a coworker but something was definitely off. We walked through both markets, learned about mole, the traditional bread, tried chapulines and tejate, saw three different churches and. various other iconic locations.
Really knowledgeable guide. I learnt so much about Oaxaca’s history and the food tasting at the markets was real treat! I would 100% recommend this tour!!!
What a fabulous tour! There is so much to learn about Oaxaca’s rich history and Roberto was infinitely knowledgeable. As well as learning about history, we had food tastings at the markets as well as trying some Mescal of course!! I couldn’t resist buying the Oaxaca chocolate after tasting it. And I rarely eat chocolate!!! I would 100% recommend this tour!
Highly recommend doing this tour when you first arrive to Oaxaca as it helps to orient and learn the layout! Learned a lot of great facts and traditions of the city!
I had such a wonderful time with Cesar. We walked all through the city and the markets. He put up with my mediocre Spanish and was so affable about it. Has a wonderful enthusiasm for the city.
