JJ was the highlight of this tour! We loved the history and the locations, butt JJ brought it to life. Such a spooky good time! Highly recommend!!
The tour was great snd the highlight of our visit in New Orleans! Doug was the best (we passed others on the way!)
The most terrifying part of the experience was at the end. The guide did not end the tour where it began or at the planned end point. He ended it on a side street which did not have any businesses or bars. The group dispersed quickly and within minutes my friend and I found ourselves alone at night in an unfamiliar city. When my friend tried to get an Uber they wanted us to go to a main road to meet them. It was an awful experience and negatively impacted the rest of our trip.
Doug (or the weird guy in a kilt 😆) was amazing. He has a lovely personality you can't help but be enamored by! He keeps it real and lively at the same time. I have always loved NOLA and have been facinated by the history and lore. I've been on several tours throughout my years. This one was the best by far. You can tell he has truly done his research on, not just the tour areas, but ALL of NOLA. Many tours sensationalize the basic half "truths" or only speak on a surface level knowledge. With this tour, you'll get the truth after what headlines printed decades ago. 10/10 made respect for the weird guy in a kilt. ♡
Doug was an excellent guide. Stories were so interesting. He made it so fun. Best story teller ever. And we learned so much about he city. Take this tour!
Hi Paula! Thank you for the 5-stars! We are thrilled to hear you enjoyed your time with Doug and found him to be the best storyteller ever! We love hearing when our guests feel that they learned so much! We appreciate the recommendation and thank you for choosing Hottest Hell Tours!
What a waste of time and money. Tonight we got a tour led by a grown up theater kid wearing his burning-man skirt. The tour was all bravado and zero history . He told woke-washed stories that had zero depth. I actually got more information the night before while walking past other tour groups than I did on this tour we paid for. If you want a handful of historical references dotted in between leftist politics and lame pop culture references (e.g. nicolas cage lived here and got arrested in the french quarter) then this is the tour for you. I don't know if it is the tour guide or the company , , but this absolutely sucked in comparison to the tour I took many years ago. In 1999 I took the most popular, cheap, and common walking tour of the French Quarter. It blew my mind, making me question what I thought I knew about the South, race relations, the status of women, blacks, mixed-race people and Irish in early New Orleans . We learned about history, government, geography, true crime, horrific things that happened to slaves, how mixed race people rose in society, mosquito borne plagues, the origin of patio furniture, and why the cemeteries are built the way they are, plus some interesting stuff about voodoo/ghosts/vampires. It stuck with me for years and changed how I thought about the world. In comparison, the only thing that stuck with me on this tour was how lame it was.
Liz: We seem to have a problem here. And the problem is this: You think you know more than you do. For the sake of future guests, I’m going to keep this reply as succinct as possible but boy oh boy, do you have a lot to learn. Let’s start with “grown up theatre kid wearing his burning man skirt.” That’s not just a theatre kid, that’s a SAG-AFTRA member who has more credits to his name than you have IQ points. “Zero history” Pffft. I think not. You do know he was wearing a body cam and we have the entire tour recorded, right? This Company is owned by a former history professor. We’re going to come back to that in a few… “Woke-washed”. What? Tell me you can’t handle the truth without telling me you can’t handle the truth of the past. “Leftist politics” Did you miss the part where you learned New Orleans is democratic/left? (Rhetorical question, but I’m going to answer it for you because you need to know the lies you’ve been previously told). That tour you took in 1999 that was so cheap? It’s 2026, Liz. That was 27 years ago. What, we’re begging you to tell us, has remained the same exact price since then? Are you sure you were old enough to even take this tour???? I can’t imagine anyone grown who doesn’t understand basic economics. And let’s talk about that tour, too. A considerable amount of that tour was not based on actual historical record. Let me guess…you learned about placage, were told everyone got along in this 3-tiered society and even Free People of Color owned Enslaved people (we don’t say slaves anymore, Liz, they were humans who were enslaved), and the Creoles (not “mixed race,” race is social construct that came out of white supremacy, Liz, don’t you know that?) I’m sure you heard some stories about “quadroons” and “octaroons” (problematic words today) and by the way, New Orleans is in the South, but it’s not “the south.” New Orleans, historically, is nothing like any other city in the United States. The World Monument Fund just determined that New Orleans is the ONLY irreplaceable city in the entire country. And that city, has been predominantly Afro-American since the 1800’s. Oooo, yeah, and my favorite, I bet you were told we bury people above ground because of the water line and flooding? Am I right? Guess what, Liz? That’s not true. We bury above ground because that’s how the Spanish did it and we were under Spanish rule when our first above ground cemetery, St. Louis #1, was built. We buried in the ground prior to that. Water line and flooding have nothing to do with it. Now, you’re probably thinking, how could I possibly know all this? Before I was the owner of Hottest Hell Tours, I was a tour guide, and while I’ve been a tour guide I went an earned some advanced degree that allowed me to do REAL research (in the archives kind, not google) and in that process I discovered that some of the stories proliferated through the French Quarter by tour guides with other companies are entirely made up! So, once I headed to graduate school, I decided to do better. The city needed a Company solely focused on historical accuracy, otherwise, people like you were always going to come along and think that some made up story they heard 27 years ago is the hard line truth. So, that’s how I know all the things you were told that were probably wrong. I’m sure they got some things right, Yellow Fever is a hard story to mess up. And, that’s how I know you’re full of it when talking about Doug, who was wearing a kilt, not a skirt and who has never attended burning man in his life. But hey, you knew that right? Because you learned so much about everything 27 years ago on a cheap tour? Right.
It's was pretty ordinary and overrated. It's not really what we expected. Streets were also filled with 12 other tours all going to the same spots. A tour seems unnecessary, better of just doing your own research about the town's history/haunted buildings and seeing them in your own time.
Hi Tim, We're sorry to hear that you found the tour overrated. Guests on the same tour with you found the tour great and have already left multiple 5-star reviews. It seems that perhaps you might have not done your research on New Orleans since you're so surprised at how busy the busiest tourist section and most historical section of the city gets. We would also recommend doing better research on what tour you choose, since you seem to think you're a level above "most desired tourist spots". We have tours that go other places, and if you had taken your own advice, you'd already know that. Also, since you also don't really seem to understand what real research requires, (hint: it's not a google search), we wouldn't recommend anyone else just do a google search. There's way too much misinformation out there to be sure what you're actually hearing or reading is historically correct and not embellished, exaggerated, or simply made up.
We enjoyed Doug as our tour guide. He was knowledgeable but also made the tour engaging!

Doug was a delight. Can’t recommend this tour enough! We had a blast and it’s such a great way to explore a city.
Thank you so much Chloe! We agree that our tours are the perfect way to explore our city's in depth- history, and we're thrilled your tour with Doug was delightful. Thank you for choosing Hottest Hell!
Can’t recommend this tour enough! The tour guide was very fun and engaging. I liked how he differentiated between what was actually historical truth and what had become legend. Overall great experience.
Thank you so much Riley! We firmly believe that the truth of our history is often more fascinating than any made-up stories, and we really appreciate your recommendation. Thank you for choosing Hottest Hell!
