Med en av de mest kända vandringslederna i hela Japan sätter vi sin fot där på vår jakt efter traditionella Japan. Magome och Tsumago är två vackert bevarade traditionella byar. Denna värdefulla Nakasendo-vandringsdag mellan Magome och Tsumago med en regeringslicenserad och erfaren flerspråkig reseguide är ett fantastiskt och effektivt sätt att utforska båda de gamla poststäderna! Det är cirka 8 kilometer (5 miles) långt och har bara milda höjdförändringar vilket tar cirka 2 timmar att gå lätt i lugn takt. Denna privata turné är en vandringsdagstur. Vänligen bär vandringskängor och utrustning för denna turné. Kollektivtrafik eller lokala taxibilar kan användas för att åka mellan platser. Medan Magome och Tsumago tjänade samma syften för gamla resenärer, har staden bevarats och restaurerats på ett helt annat sätt än Tsumago, med en bred stenväg fodrad med träd och många traditionella hus och hantverksbutiker. En annan skillnad är att det ligger i en sluttning, vilket leder till en vacker utsikt över den omgivande dalen, och det finns flera små museer som visar stadens historia, de konstnärer som bodde där och deras sätt att leva. Jag skulle rekommendera att ta en drink eller något att äta på restaurangerna på toppen av byn och njuta av utsikten över dalen, eller i den nedre delen för att blanda med de mycket intressanta lokalbefolkningen.
Tsumago är nästan platt men också en mycket charmig by som tar dig tillbaka till det gamla Japan. Staden var ett av de första historiska bevarandeprojekten i hela Japan (om inte det första) och den återskapar atmosfären med sina olagda gator och dolda kablar. Det håller många av de traditionella husen, som det ursprungliga värdshuset (Honjin) som välkomnade köpmännen som reste Nakasendo, och det sekundära värdshuset (Wakihonjin), den gamla anslagstavlan som användes för att publicera dekreten från Shogun, det buddhistiska templet ( byggd under XVI-talet) ... Men du tycker att det är ännu mer charmigt om det är bäst att njuta av på natten, när de tänder upp sina lyktor och allt blir tyst men kanske en trumma som slår.

The Nakasendo Trail hike is a great blend of nature and culture. There are many beautiful views of forests, mountains, rivers and waterfalls along the trail. We encountered several traditional houses and Post towns reminiscent of the Edo period. Taku, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and kind. He made sure we took plenty of breaks on a very hot and arduous hike. He also stayed late to accompany us when our train was substantially delayed. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone interested in exploring Japan outside of its big cities.

Your question about why the doors of the houses in Magome are so small was very interesting and inspired me to learn more. After looking into it, I found that the average height of Japanese people during the Edo period was about 15 cm shorter than today. The average height for men was around 155 cm. I also learned that the doors were made smaller not only because people were shorter, but also to help keep the houses warm and to improve security. Our guide Taku Hasegawa was so knowledgeable and pointed out so many interesting facts whilst we were hiking the Nakasendo trail. He made sure we had regular breaks on what was an extremely hot day and the whole experience was really enjoyable.

We had the pleasure of joining Yuriko for a beautiful and informative walk from Magome to Tsumago on the Nakasendo Trail. Yuriko is a wonderful educator with great knowledge of the history and lore of the post towns on the trail. She made the experience easy, too, providing us with a perfect schedule for the day, including meeting us at our guest house in the morning and arranging for a bento box lunch that we shared under cherry blossoms. Yuriko made the stories come alive and provided us with an unforgettable experience in a magical part of Japan. Enthusiastically recommended!

Hiroshi-San was an excellent guide. Gave us a history of Japan before we started the walk so we have understanding of the Nakasendo walk history. He was a gentleman and speaks English well as he lived in USA for a long time. He was attentive and very helpful holding my arm as I navigate the downhill slope as I was afraid of falling, We enjoyed Hiroshi-San company very much. It is better to have a guide as we saw some people taking the wrong way and Hiroshi-San alerted them ... perhaps they are on wrong path. Definitely recommend Hiroshi-San as a guide. Loved walking the trail and learning a lot of history from our awesome guide Ito. You can hike it on your own but we thought it was worth it to learn so much about the area. He also took us through a museum and explained everything - nothing in English. He also gave great suggestions for regional foods. Bring cash because you’ll need it for restaurants, museum, trains, cabs, busses.

We had a great day with Yoshi despite the full day of rain walking from Magome to Tsumago. Yoshi shared about the history and background to the Nakasendo and also brought us to a lovely spot for lunch and was great with our two boys with little gifts for them. It was a very enjoyable walk on the misty track and we were glad to have Yoshi guiding us. Highly recommended.

Very enjoyable walk albeit overpriced for what was on offer. Matt, our guide was friendly and good company. He brought us to a great lunch venue, the food was excellent. This walk could easily be done independently.
