Utforska UNESCO:s världsarvslista vid Meteora, en klippformation i centrala Grekland som är värd för ett av de största och mest brant byggda komplexen av östortodoxa kloster på denna privata heldagsutflykt. Avresa från Aten, passera genom de natursköna städerna Amphissa, Lamia och Trikala innan du anländer till Meteora, namnet Meteora används för att definiera vilken stenig platå eller brant klippformation som helst. Klostren byggdes mellan 1300- och 1800-talen, deras placering valdes noggrant så att munkarna kunde vara så nära Gud som möjligt.

Vi anländer till Meteora och besöker tre kloster. Hisnande vid första platsen är klostren av stor kulturell och naturlig betydelse. Dessa enorma klippor är splittrade från jordbävningar, vittrade från vinden och vattnet under miljontals miljoner år, ett autentiskt mästerverk av moder natur. Meteora är en klippformation i centrala Grekland med ett av de största och mest brant byggda komplexen av östortodoxa kloster. De sex (av de ursprungliga 24) klostren är byggda på enorma naturliga pelare och kulleliknande rundade stenblock som dominerar det lokala området. Meteora finns med på Unescos världsarvslista och namnet betyder "hög", "förhöjd", och är etymologiskt relaterad till meteor. Vänligen var anständigt klädd. Kvinnor rekommenderas att bära långa kjolar och långa ärmar. Har du inte det får du en kjol i vägen in.
Fri tid för lunch på en traditionell grekisk taverna med dina vänner och familj eller shoppa i Kastraki, en pittoresk by nära Meteora.
På vår väg tillbaka till Aten kommer vi att göra ett stopp vid slagfältet Thermopylae för att beundra statyn av kung Leonidas. Leonidas var kung av den grekiska stadsstaten Sparta och hade ett anmärkningsvärt deltagande i andra persiska kriget, där han ledde de allierade grekiska styrkorna till en sista ställning i slaget vid Thermopylae (480 f.Kr.) samtidigt som han försökte försvara passet från den invaderande persiska armén; han dog i slaget och gick in i myten som ledare för de 300 spartanerna. Medan grekerna förlorade denna strid kunde de driva ut de persiska inkräktarna året därpå.
Vi kommer tillbaka till Aten sent på eftermiddagen. Restiden är ca 4,5 timmar.

George Remoundos was Amazing!!! He was very knowledgable, pointed out important landmarks and buildings for us. Stopped for a lot of photos. Accomodated the kids washroom breaks. He was the best!!! If you go to Meteora, make sure to go with George. You will love it.

We spent the day with our guide George Remoundos, who was so kind, easy to talk to, and extremely knowledgeable about our journey. Meteora is a magical, beautiful place. ancient monasteries sitting on huge sandstone columns. A mystical place with great byzantine christian art and breathtaking views . It is about 3.5 hours drive from Athens. We did a round trip in 13 hours. Worth staying overnight if you have the time. Also enjoyed the stop t historical Thermopylae, where the 300 Spartans took their last stand. Our driver George was exceptional. Was on time, very nice, knowledgeable, patient and helpful. I should add, I've used Viator a few times over the past few years and haven't regretted. So far, very good experiences. I'd recommend it

Meteora is a really beautiful and interesting place to visit. A private tour I think is the best way to do it because you get to spend more time at each monastery and maximize your time. George our tour guide was professional, specially knowledgeable and very attentive. He explained a lot of the history and interesting facts while driving from place to place, and he took us to a good restaurant with delicious authentic food at a good price. I really recommend this tour and remember to ask for George if you want to have the best experience.

If you ever have the chance to tour Meteora with George, TAKE IT! Yes, it does make for a very long day leaving out of Athens. But the drive is on good roads, George is safe driver and most importantly, he is describing some of the history of the area while driving through it. The absolute star of this tour however, has to be Meteora. One word: STUNNING!

I am still stunned by Meteora. The views were amazing, unlike any other. The monasteries had so much detail it's almost unbelievable that they were built so long ago. Our driver George took good care of us especially since it was such a long drive, he provided lots of history about the lands on the way. I would definitely do it again, you can't get enough of the views looking to and down from the monasteries. Be prepared to hike! Much less to say about Thermopylae but it's in the way so why not...
