We loved this tour. We were picked up in the Trabants. Guide is a collector of Trabants and has lots of passion for her cars. The park is interesting and helpful to understand communist propaganda. The tour does go into some depth with information, which was perfect for my group, but might be too much for non-history people.
It’s not an elite sports car, but it turned more heads than any bazillion dollar auto!!! What a fun excursion. The car is so unique and cool, but the driver/guide Judy was also amazing. We truly enjoyed this experience so much. She was so informative and willing to share Hungarian knowledge and we truly felt that this was the best way to see memento Park and get an insight into some of Hungarian history. Really really enjoyed it and recommend highly.
We had an amazing tour (private) with Ildi. She is incredibly informative and brought the whole park to life. She explained the architecture, the official purposes of the statues, and some of the pushback against the propaganda by the Hungarian artists and people. We felt we received excellent value and highly recommend the private tour.
This was a highlight of our trip! Judit our guide was super personable, knowledgeable and a lot of fun. We learned so much about this era of Hungarian history and the ride in the Trabant was a once in a lifetime experience!! I couldn’t recommend this experience highly enough
My husband and I had a very interesting, enjoyable trip visit to Momento Park. The car ride was fun, and our tour guide was very friendly and informative, and gave us recommendations for lunch and dropped us off at our next sight after the tour. I would definitely recommend.
Would strongly recommend this way of visiting Memento Park. The combination of the car, the journey and the knowledge of Zoltan, our wonderful guide, made it a great learning experience. I never realised there were so many characteristics within the statues of the communist propaganda mythology. We came away with a real appreciation of the communist eras in Hungary, and thank you so much Zoltan for answering our questions and making it such a great morning. 😊👍
This tour is an absolute must when visiting Budapest. We were picked up from our hotel in a 1978 Communist-era Trabant. We arrived at Memento Park where our guide Balazs gave us a tour and gave us thorough explanations of many of the statues that were on display. Balazs was extremely engaging, and we were very lucky to have him as our guide. This tour was unique, memorable, and was one of the highlights of our visit to Budapest. Highly recommend!
Fascinating on a whole range of levels and topics. There was of course all the history and politics…but by taking the Trabant tour not only did you have the convenience of door-to-door service and the fun of riding IN a legit piece of history BUT you also get to chat to your driver/guide all the time about life, society and anything else you like. Such a good tour
A trip to Budapest would not be complete without a visit to Memento Park. This park is an open-air museum located outside of the main city, dedicated to monumental statues and sculpted plaques from Hungary's Communist period (after WWII to –1989). Our goal was to learn more of that period in Hungary's history. We could have tried to navigate getting there by the Metro and then a bus, but decided to treat ourselves to a guided tour and a ride in a vintage Trabant. What an amazing treat and experience it was! We were so fortunate to have Judit Holp as our most knowledgeable guide and driver in her personal Trabant. She picked us up where we were staying, and I reached out to her prior to see if it would be possible to get dropped off elsewhere. Our time in Budapest was limited and she graciously dropped us off right in the Castle Hill area close to Matthias Church. She even recommended a restaurant for lunch, and we were glad we took her suggestion. We enjoyed a wonderful authentic Hungarian meal at Fekete Hollo (Black Raven Inn). Here at home in Ontario we having been trying to erase history by removing statues of Prime Ministers and monarchs, renaming schools and streets. History can't and shouldn't be erased. The goal is to learn from it and when it is negative don't let it repeat. We could use a museum like Memento Park.
Judit Holp was our guide. She is fantastic. She is funny, knowledgeable and knows how to drive a Trabant. One of the best experiences on our Gate 1 trip to Budapest, Vienna and Prague. This is the only museum in Central Europe that displays Communist statues - there are 41 of them. Other countries destroyed their statues after gaining independence from Russia. The park is 30 minutes out of town. People stared and waved as we passed by in the Trabant. We felt like rock stars. The tour lasted several hours. We learned from Judit about life under Communism and the historical significance of each statue. She was never boring! This is a photographer's paradise! There is a small museum and a small gift show.
