Vi träffas vid den västra änden av St Paul's Cathedral nära den stora trappan. Detta underverk byggdes av Sir Cristopher Wren efter den stora branden 1666. Elden förstörde större delen av det medeltida London men det finns gott om platser som överlevde i närheten. Sir Christopher spelar en roll i de andra byggnaderna vi kommer att se så vi måste lära oss om honom och London före 1666. Det är 18 minuters promenad till St Bart's.
På väg till St Barts Priory stannar vi vid minnesmärket över William Wallace den skotske hjälten som kämpade för skotsk självständighet.
Church of St Bartholomew-the-Great är en pärla från 1100-talet. Mycket av det överlevde inte bara den stora branden 1666 utan också reformationen, inbördeskriget och The Blitz of WW2. den östra sidan av kyrkan behåller fantastiska valv, kolonner och gravar. Det är en tidig normandisk kyrka och kommer att vara värdefullt att jämföra den med de andra kyrkorna vi kommer att besöka byggda under de senare medeltida århundradena.
Vi kommer att diskutera det medeltida Londons murar och stanna vid Newgate en av Londons gamla ingångar. Det blev senare känt som ett fängelse. Det är där Old Bailey (London Criminal Court) byggdes och fortfarande används.
Om du har sett eller läst Da Vinci-koden så vet du om Tempelriddaren. Dessa medeltida munk-riddare var en rik och mystisk korsfararstyrka. De hade stora rikedomar och byggde denna kyrka på 1100-talet. Även denna överlevde den stora branden men de viktorianska restauratörerna gjorde det mesta av skadan! Dess otroliga stenvalvtak överlevde The Blitz när bomber regnade ner runt det. Det finns en bra länk här till USA:s grundare - så den bör inte missas!

First of all, Dr Geoff knows his history! His tour was top notch and we really enjoyed all the sites and stories about medieval London…he speaks very articulately and intelligently without being academic or boring…in fact, he makes the history come alive and fascinating! He is easy going and friendly and we are very excited to book one of his longer trips next summer to learn more about medieval Britain…highly recommend Dr Geoff to show you the highlights of English history!

Dr. Geoff is an excellent tour guide. He is an extremely learned man with expert knowledge on medieval Churches and British history. Dr. Geoff began the private tour at St. Paul's Cathedral and took us to St. Bartholomew the Great as well as Temple Church. The latter two Churches are hidden relics of the Middle Ages that still survive today. He answered all our questions eloquently while explaining the architectural research he completed at Oxford. I certainly recommend Dr. Geoff's tour to anyone who is interested in the rich history of England and its Churches.
