Manta ray snorkeling with Dolphin DIscoveries

It was fun, amazing, unreal, exciting experience. We saw a lot of manta rays. The guides were great, helpful, fun, and provided a lot of information.

I wanted to love it. ...

I wanted to love it. Don’t get me wrong. The staff was amazing. Super knowledgeable and I felt safe at all times. There was no parking near the dock. It all felt very rushed. One minute you’re boarding and the next you are jumping into dark waters. We saw two manta rays. No guarantee you will see any. Waters have been rough here on the Big Island lately so that made me nauseous. It was freezing though they give you a wet suit top. My review is not about the company but more about the experience. It isn’t for the faint of heart and just know it could be a lot of cold and rough waters for not seeing much.

Really Disappointed Would Like a Refund

I was extremely disappointed with the Manta Ray Night Snorkeling with Dolphin Discoveries. I don’t even know where to begin. Several years ago I was on the Island and did the same experience myself with another company and really loved it. So I thought this experience would be incredible for my husband and teens about 7 years later. This tour with this company was not worth the money. I would sadly not recommend it to anyone. 1. They pack a very small boat full of too many people. Some of the companies do have larger boats. I’d look for one of those. The companies with larger boats seem to get better positions and views for their customers. 2. There were 2 guides for like 20 people. The day we went the water was extremely rough and it was a bit difficult to hold on. While I’m a very good swimmer, it felt very unsafe in the dark trying to hold on. 3. There were 2 guides on a very long light board. The guides literally were trying to push all those people through the water, we were not tethered to the boat and the boat was not close to us. If someone had needed to retreat back to the boat quickly it would have been extremely difficult to get there. I consider this a safety issue. Again, there are companies that are not like this. 3. The water was very choppy which obviously the company had not control of, but I don’t feel like they took the safety of everyone into account by cramming too many people and not enough guides and not being close to the boat. 4. My snorkel broke in transit. My son’s wetsuit had holes in it and he got very cold. Their equipment doesn’t seem well taken care of. I feel like this company is taking advantage of the number of people wanting to do this snorkel instead of actually caring about the customer. It feels like a money grab at this point. I paid $500 for the 5 of us for a poor experience. 5. I did not even see a Manta Ray or anything else at all. While I realize this is out of their control and that it’s wild animals. But Other groups were seeing them from other companies because I could hear people yelling. I feel like this company was not able to get us to a spot to even see them because they didn’t have a good boat. Better companies had better positions. I’m so disappointed in this experience. I’ve been really upset over it. I feel really taken advantage of at this point. I don’t write a review like this unless I felt like I don’t get the experience this is in control of the vendor and they provide an horrible experience. I’m really sad. This my Hawaii experience with my teens and one is about to graduate high school and they literally had one job. I felt like I was a number on their boat the way the guides and boat attendants treated us instead of a guest. This can be a great experience but don’t use this company. I kind of doubt they will even care about this poor review because I just feel like they took my money and threw us on a boat.

Operatörens svar

Aloha Becky, We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your tour. That said, it is important to clarify that this is an open-ocean wildlife experience, and manta rays are wild animals whose presence can never be guaranteed. Every manta tour can be different, and expectations should reflect the unpredictable nature of viewing wildlife in its natural environment. For that reason, we offer a manta guarantee option at the time of booking. You chose not to purchase that option. Even so, we still extend a 50% return-trip discount as a courtesy, which keeps the overall cost competitive compared with many other operators. We also want to address your safety concerns directly. We maintain one of the largest crew-to-guest ratios in the industry at approximately 1:10, while many operators run closer to 1:20. Our guides complete rigorous lifeguard training and hold CPR and AED certifications. We also conduct quarterly safety procedure training in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard requirements. Regarding the broken snorkel and wetsuit concerns, we carry spare equipment on board and are happy to provide replacements when guests let us know there is an issue. If a concern is not brought to the crew’s attention during the tour, we are not given the opportunity to correct it in the moment. It is also worth noting that no company saw manta rays that night. Noise or excitement from nearby vessels does not necessarily mean rays were present. Again, we are sorry the manta rays were not present during your tour. However, we stand by our crew, our safety practices, and the information provided before booking. Wildlife encounters always involve uncertainty, and for guests who want added protection against that disappointment, the manta guarantee is available. We wish you the best and hope your future wildlife experiences align more closely with your expectations.

Mind-blowing

This was far and away the highlight of our trip to the Big Island. It's such a unique experience--the manta rays get so close to you! Highly recommended. We regret not planning for underwater photography! It's a bit of a shame not to have any pictures to commemorate such an exciting experience. Learn from our oversight :)

Waste of money!!

We went out at on an 8 o’clock booking during a rain. We saw the same adolescent Manta ray swim by us 4 times at a distance. As the guide moved us further away from the on shore flood lights the water became murky. There were so many boats in the same area that the lights saturated the water. The crew was nice (they are paid to be), but when offering an explanation for the lack of mantas all they would say is, “Well, these are wild animals,” in a rather friendly yet condescending way (exact same scripted line 3 different times. Later on, I learned that the earlier travelers saw no rays. Wild animals still behave in predictable patterns, and if the rays won’t show up during storms, then the company should be up front about the chances of seeing rays (plural) up close. They are experts in the behavior of these animals, but they are happy to make boatloads of money, even if the experience is very lacking. I have dived and snorkeled a lot in many different locations all over the world. This is the biggest rip off I’ve ever experienced. You should go with somebody else at a different, better location. Don’t go early and certainly not during a storm if you can help it. Also, please don’t tip!!! This excursion has a massive profit margin and they are charging a ton for what they provide! Not everybody deserves a tip.

Operatörens svar

Aloha, We’re sorry your experience did not meet your expectations, but we do need to clarify a few important points. Manta rays are wild animals, and while Keauhou Bay has highly consistent sightings, no operator can guarantee their behavior, visibility, or the number of rays seen on any given night. It is inaccurate to suggest our crew was being dismissive by explaining this. That is not an excuse; it is the reality of any responsible wildlife encounter. Our crew works hard to provide a safe, respectful, and educational experience in real ocean conditions. We also strongly disagree with calling the tour a “rip off.” Our pricing is among the most affordable in the industry, and we have proudly served guests from around the world for 30 years with strong ratings across platforms. Tipping is always optional, but discouraging others from tipping the crew because wildlife did not perform to your expectations is unfair to the people working hard to keep guests safe and informed. Mahalo.

Experience of a lifetime

Experience was amazing. Mantas were so beautiful. Really an experience of a lifetime. There were about four or five of them circling around.

Tour de Manta

The manta ray experience itself was enjoyable, but the tour description should be more transparent about the logistics. It doesn’t mention that you’ll need to drive a considerable distance to the meeting point, where parking is extremely limited. There is no dedicated parking, so you’re left to search for a spot on busy residential streets. We had to park one to two blocks away and walk to the meeting location, which added unnecessary stress before the tour. This is important information that should be clearly stated in the listing so guests can plan ahead and allow extra time.

Operatörens svar

Aloha Nyree, We’re sorry to hear you were disappointed, but we do want to clarify that the check-in process and two-location meeting instructions are clearly provided before the tour. Our listing states in the “What to Expect” section that the listed start time is the check-in time, not the departure time, and specifically notes that guests should not arrive early. It also explains that this tour has two designated meeting locations: first, guests check in at our store to be fitted with gear, receive a boarding pass, and get directions to the bay; second, guests proceed to the boat for the safety briefing and manta ray experience. In addition, we sent both an email and a text message on June 20, 2026 with the same information, including a video to help guests find us and written instructions identifying both locations. Those instructions explained that guests must first meet at our retail store located at 78-6831 Ali‘i Drive to check in, be screened, and receive equipment. They also explained that guests then drive 1.4 miles to Keauhou Bay to board the boat, with directions provided at check-in. We make every effort to prepare guests by providing these details in the listing, by email, and by text message. It is the guest’s responsibility to review the information provided before arrival so the trip can run safely and on schedule. While we understand that travel logistics can be confusing, the instructions for this tour were sent in advance and clearly outlined multiple times. Mahalo.

Changes

This has changed in the last two years. It was a lot more low key with much fewer boats before. Now, it’s still an amazing experience, but with TONS of other people. We were crowded onto the light platform and I was fighting for space the whole time. It didn’t help that people from other groups were literally screaming every time they saw a manta. It really took away from what could be a serene and peaceful experience. They’re also fitting in shorter tours so they can do more in a night. Like I said, still an amazing time getting close to the mantas, but it was much less than the first time I did this. Kind of a shame.

Operatörens svar

Aloha Lisel, Mahalo for joining us. We’re sorry to hear that your experience was affected by the growing popularity of manta ray snorkeling and by the actions of guests from another company. While we do not see a reservation in our system showing that you joined us before July 1, 2026, we appreciate you sharing your feedback. We’ve found that about 30 minutes in the water is generally the right amount of time for most guests to enjoy seeing the manta rays, as many begin asking to return to the boat after that point. That said, it sounds like our Private Charter option may be a great fit for you on a future visit, as it allows for more flexibility, the opportunity to move away from the crowds, and a more peaceful, serene experience. Please reach out to us on your next vacation—we’d be happy to help you book a Private Charter.

Must Do!!

Unbelievable experience. Be patient when in the water - the guides will position you to see Manta Rays. We had several Manta Rays do barrel rolls . We had one family member not go in the water and she had a great time on the boat watching and could see the manta rays and dolphins. Dolphin Discoveries was great. Ethan our guide was knowledgeable about the Manta Rays.
