When booking this tour, which lasted about an hour in Makoko plus the taxi rides to and from the meeting point, you should be aware that you are entering a slum, with all its smells, mud, and dirt. I was traveling alone and took a taxi to the meeting point at Makoko Olaiya Mosque. When I arrived, I initially felt that I did not belong in this neighborhood, especially because of my white skin. However, I received a very warm welcome from my guide, Respect. He led me through the very narrow walkways of Makoko, where he was greeted by many residents, clearly reflecting the trust and respect he has within the community. He introduced me to his family, showed me his home, and took me to the school that his family supports, where they provide food and education for a large number of children. We also took a boat trip through the lagoon, during which he explained the challenges the community faces. Throughout the tour, I felt completely safe and genuinely welcome. Despite the extreme poverty and difficult living conditions, I experienced a remarkably friendly and close-knit community. At no point did I feel pressured to give more money, and I am confident that the tour fee is used to support the schoolchildren and their meals. Thank you very much for this authentic and eye-opening insight into life in Makoko. I hope to find ways to continue supporting this community in the future.
This was amazing from start to finish! The Chief's son was a great tour guide. Even down to getting my husband and I lifejackets because we are not swimmers. If you could see what is possible when people have just what they can manage, you can see these people doing great things. The schools, the hospitals, the accommodations, everything was fantastic! You must make this a staple of your trip to LAGOS!
it is Easter. everyone is beautifully dressed with their colourful clothes. and singing in different churches. a different and interesting experience with a local. It's definitely worth a visit.
Respect was the perfect guide. The tour was very informative. Its important to see first hand the problems this community is facing and raise awareness. Highly recommend to others.
