Möt din Guide Shore tempel. Den UNESCO världsarvslistade staden är hem för klippta statyer som går tillbaka så långt som 600-talet. Erkänd som några av de äldsta exemplen på dravidisk arkitektur, dessa välbevarade artefakter byggdes för att hedra hinduiska gudar.

Det magnifika templet har utsikt över Bengaliska bukten och var ett viktigt centrum under Pallavas regeringstid när Mahabalipuram var den viktigaste hamnen i deras kungarike. Strandtemplet byggdes av kung Raja Simha under början av 700-talet och är ett landmärke i Indiens arkitektoniska landskap. Marco Polo hänvisade till detta som de sju pagoderna. Det befintliga templet är det sista överlevande av de 7 som en gång stod som en ledstjärna för sjöfarare.
Dessa är stenhuggna monolittempel strukturer byggda på 600-talet. Var och en av de 5 rathas eller vagnar är tillägnade huvudrollsinnehavarna i Mahabharat epos - Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakul-Sahadeva, Bhima och Yudhister. Det finns också en skulptur av en elefant bredvid ratha Nakul-Sahadeva. När du står mot elefantens baksida kommer du att märka att det finns en kuslig likhet mellan vagnens baksida och elefanten.
Nästa gång besöker vi Arjuna’s Penace, ett basreliefmonument som anses vara ett av Indiens mest magnifika antika konstverk, som skildrar levande scener från Mahabharata. Reliefen är 100 fot lång och 45 fot hög! Huvudhistorien som berättas är hur Arjuna, en av bröderna Pandava, utförde svåra åtstramningar för att få tag på Lord Shivas vapen.
Detta märkliga stenblock verkar trotsa Newtons gravitationslagar och har inte rört sig en tum trots att det har varit i detta prekära läge på sluttningen i mer än tusen år.
Varaha-grottan är huggen ur en enorm bit granit och går tillbaka till 600-talet. Detta tempel tog flera decennier att färdigställa.
Pandavagrottan är det största grotttemplet vid Mahabalipuram Grottan bärs upp på sex pelare och två pilastrar.
Två av Mahabalipurams mest imponerande konstverk finns i denna grotta.
Detta är en imponerande vagn huggen ur en enda sten. IT var ursprungligen tillägnad Lord Shiva, men har nu hans son Lord Ganeshs gudom.
IT byggdes år 640 och är Indiens äldsta fyr och en av de äldsta i världen.
