Av Sydindias fem Shiva-tempel i samband med de fem elementen är denna 12 hektar stora del av jordens helgedom. Du kommer in under den 59m höga, omärkta södra gopuramen, vars livliga sniderier var mejlade i 1509 under Vijayanagar-regeln. Inuti leder en kolonnad hall till vänster in i den centrala föreningen, som Nandi möter från höger. Det inre sanktumet (endast hinduer) innehåller en lingam av jord och en spegelkammare vars centrala Shiva-bild återspeglas i oändlig upprepning.
Vi kommer att besöka det magnifika templet Kailasanathar-templet från Pallava-tiderna. Kanchipuram var huvudstaden i det medeltida södra indiska kungariket Pallavas. Pallavasna var instrumental i övergången från rock-cut arkitektur till sten tempel. Vi kommer att uppskatta dessa arkitektoniska underverk byggda 600 AD.
Huddled tillsammans i södra änden av Mamallapuram, var de fem Rathas förvånansvärt allt huggade från enstaka stora stenar. Var och en av dessa fina 7-talets tempel var tillägnad en hinduisk gud och är nu uppkallad efter en eller flera av Pandavas, de fem hjältebröderna i den episka Mahabharata, eller deras vanliga fru Draupadi. Rathorna var gömda i sanden tills de grävdes av britterna för 200 år sedan. Ratha är sanskrit för "vagn", och kan hänvisa till templets form eller till deras funktion som fordon för gudarna. Man trodde att de inte ursprungligen fungerade som gudstjänster men som arkitektoniska modeller.
Vi besöker också Arjuna's Penance, en 100 fot x 45 fot bas relief där ett helt mästerverk från Mahabharata epic har skurits.
Nästa stopp är vid Krishna's Butterball, en nyfiken syn på en 5 meter diameter bollformad sten som ligger högt uppe på en sluttning och trotsar Newtons tyngdlagar!
Stående som en magnifik knytnäve av klippklippt elegans med utsikt över havet, omgiven av trädgårdar och förstörda domstolar, symboliserar det tvåtorniga Shore-templet höjderna av Pallava-arkitekturen och de maritima ambitionerna hos Palakakungarna. Den lilla storleken förmodar sin utmärkta andel och högsta kvalitet på sniderierna, många nu uthärda i vagt impressionistiska utsmyckningar. Byggd under Narasimhavarman II på 8-talet, är det det tidigaste betydande fristående stentempelet i Tamil Nadu.

Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram made for an excellent day trip and a fascinating introduction to the rich history and culture of Tamil Nadu. The temples and monuments were beautiful, with intricate carvings, impressive architecture, and centuries of history around every corner. They were very resourceful and made the trip fun! I thought it would be good if I wanted to travel around with peace of mind, such as traveling alone for the first time for women in India. Maybe some buses if we can get away.
