Namnet på torget har förändrats över tid. Det har varit känt som "Plaza del Arrabal", "Plaza de la Constitución", "Plaza Real", "Plaza de la República" och nu "Plaza Mayor". Dessa namn återspeglar händelser, historia och regeringstid i Spanska historien. "Plaza del Arrabal" var det ursprungliga namnet på dagens "Plaza Mayor". "Plaza del Arrabal" var en gång platsen för den mest populära Marketplace fram till slutet av 1400-talet. Efter 1812 års konstitution döptes alla större torg i Spanien om till "Plaza de la Constitución". Det hade också detta namn 1820 till 1823, 1833 till 1835, 1840 till 1843 och 1876 till 1922. När Borbón-kungen återupprättades 1814 blev det känt som "Plaza Real". 1873 ändrades namnet till "Plaza de la República". I slutet av Spanska inbördeskriget fick torget sitt nuvarande namn "Plaza Mayor".
Mer än 100 år har gått sedan Mercado de San Miguel öppnade sina dörrar som grossistmarknad för livsmedel. Idag utmärker sig denna historiska byggnad som en av världens största gastronomiska marknader. Det gör det möjligt för besökare att uppleva essensen och de viktigaste smakerna i varje hörn av Spanien. Från den finaste iberiska skinkan och färskaste fisken och skaldjuren som tas in dagligen från Galicien, till medelhavsrätter med ris och de mest utsökta ostarna från Kastilien, Asturien och Baskien – på Mercado de San Miguel hittar du alla höjdpunkter i det Spanska köket. Spridda över mer än 20 stånd, den gemensamma nämnaren här är ett åtagande för högkvalitativa tapas och pubrätter.
Denna lilla gata är en av de två mest charmiga torg i Madrid: Conde de Miranda och Villa. Och det kan skryta med att hysa ett utrymme som skyddas av den historiska och konstnärliga miljön som omger den: i hörnet av Plaza de la Villa ligger Torre de los Lujanes (tillhör 1400-talet). I samma del av gatan finns också Royal Maritense Economic Society of Friends of the Country, det gamla kommunala tidningsbiblioteket och kyrkan Corpus Christi, där Las Carboneras-klostret ligger, eftersom församlingen har en bild av den obefläckade avlelsen som finns i en träkolsugn och som olika mirakel tillskrivs milagros.
Det var en av de viktigaste medeltida centra i Madrid, eftersom tre gator utgår från det, som motsvarar den ursprungliga layouten av staden: Codo, Cordón och Madrid. I utkanten finns huvudfasaderna till tre byggnader av högt historiskt-konstnärligt värde, byggda under olika århundraden. Den äldsta är Casa y Torre de los Lujanes (1500-talet), i gotisk-Mudejar stil, som ligger på östra sidan av Plaza. Detta är nu Akademien för moral- och statsvetenskaps kontor.
Kungliga slottet i Madrid är det officiella residenset för kungen av Spanien, men de nuvarande kungarna bor inte i det, utan i Zarzuelapalatset, så det används för statliga ceremonier och högtidliga handlingar. Det är nu vårt besök verkligen börjar. Även om Juvarras ursprungliga projekt aldrig genomfördes, kan det kungliga slottet i Madrid skryta med att vara det största bebodda palatset i Europa. Och vi säger bebodd eftersom, även om den Spanska kungafamiljen inte bor i det, är det fortfarande den plats där de har sin officiella bostad. Som vi har kommenterat tidigare består byggnaden, vars verk pågick fram till 1764 då Carlos III bodde i den för första gången, av 135 000 kvadratmeter och 3 418 rum, vilket också belyser dess 870 fönster, 240 balkonger eller de 44 trappor den har.

First the meeting point's address was wrong and the whole group was not informed that the Fun&Tickets company has changed the place..thanks to the hospitality of a random guy from the place nearby we were told the new address When arrived, none of the stuff even apologised... The short walk where we were supposed to learn about Madrid was just a walk to the castle without any promised interesting stories as it was said in the tour description The castle walk was unsatisfactory as well- random information was provided in an english with such strong spanish accent that it was difficult to follow Not recommeded
At first we thought we were only visiting the royal palace, but in reality, before arriving there, we had the pleasure of seeing and learning about other parts of the city that were also linked to royal history. Federico was a professional and friendly guide who explained everything to us in great detail.

At first I was disappointed we were walking “again on another tour”. I thought we were on a tour bus as my hubby had booked it but with Beatrice, soon I forgot I was walking and exploring in the August heat. I was transported into another time of Madrid and was in my element of history. She was courteous, professional and clearly spoke English. She didn’t rush us and took care to show us many key points of interest during our tour (including brief quizzes) while visiting the Royal Spanish palace. I would recommend her as a guide to anyone.
