Detta är helt enkelt den bästa rundturen i Soweto, guidad av den berömda LocalPlaces - Johannesburg Chief Storyteller & Guide, Charlie Moyo. Det kommer att ge dig en grundlig förståelse för Soweto, såväl som historien och arvet efter apartheid. Alla som besöker Joburg måste definitivt besöka Soweto minst en gång. Southwestern Township har ett legendariskt rykte för hur dess folk gjorde motstånd mot apartheid, särskilt under ungdomsupproret 1976. Idag är Soweto en fascinerande, inspirerande och något blomstrande del av Joburg, men ändå övervinner arvet från apartheid helt klart. Den här turen tar bland annat in på det fängslande Hector Pieterson-museet, Vilakazi Street där två vinnare av Nobels fredspris en gång bodde, Mandela House Museum, Regina Mundi Church och Orlando Towers. Vi besöker detta otroliga museum och minnesmärke som hyllar och berättar historien om 1976 års studentuppror i Soweto. När barnen i Soweto reste sig mot 2:a klass utbildning i apartheidstaten. En gripande och rörande plats som är ett måste att besöka för att förstå historien om Soweto.
Den här gatan är känd för det faktum att TVÅ mottagare av Nobels fredspris bodde här: Nelson Mandela och Desmond Tutu. Idag är det en vibey gata, kantad av restauranger och ett bra ställe att stanna för en drink eller en bit.
Vi besöker huset som Nelson och Winnie Mandela en gång bodde i – hemmet han återvände till när han släpptes från fängelset 1990. Ett otroligt museum.
Denna historiska kyrka i centrala Soweto är i hjärtat av samhället och spelade en nyckelroll under Soweto-upproret, med studenter som gömde sig från apartheidpolisen här. Vi tar en rundtur i kyrkan med en lokal guide.
Detta äventyrscenter och restaurangkomplex ligger runt kyltornen på det som en gång var Orlando Power Station. Bra ställe för en öl eller en bit - eller bungyjump för de modiga!

We almost didn't include Johannesburg in our itinerary - but after we received a proposed itinerary from Local Places, we were so impressed that we stayed 3 nights and would have been happy to add another day or two if we had known what a great set of tours they offered. We booked three tours, and the Soweto full-day tour was the best of all the tours with Charlie. Living in Puerto Rico and the USA, we had only a very general knowledge of the impact of Aparthied in South Africa. Unlike many tourist-oriented tour companies where they point out sites with a basic explanation - Local Places presents a 'story-telling' format where you receive the 'full story' with extensive background, historical detail and its impact not just on South Africa, but also the rest of the world. It's often more like a 'master class' than a tour. Sometimes you can be a bit overwhelmed by dates and names you are unfamiliar with (since in the USA we learned almost nothing about South African history in school) - but it soon becomes helpful when cross-referencing other aspects of life that it affected. We arranged for private tours - so Charlie was able to shift focus or length of each location based on our feedback and questions, but I'm sure he's just as flexible with group tours. The only regret was that this tour didn't include the museum - which requires several hours to visit - and unfortunately we left the next day. Both Charlie and our driver were excellent and the restaurant we had lunch at (at our own cost) was one of our favorites of the entire trip. Highly recommended for anyone who wants an indepth tour and understanding of Soweto.

Gerald was super informative on the history of J’burg and Soweto. You really felt the history come alive through his stories and the associated site visits. The tour really made us truly appreciate the city, history, and culture. I highly highly recommend.
