I haven’t been on enough bus tours to know if Liverpool City Sights is truly the World’s Number One Bus Tour, but it is undoubtedly the best bus tour that my wife and I have had the pleasure of attending, and by a wide margin. We took the City and Beatles tour in Liverpool, and it was exceptional from start to finish. Our driver, Joe, was a lovable gentleman who could have been your grandfather, navigating the open-top double-decker bus with care, calm, and obvious pride in his city. Our guide, Tommy, was remarkable. The depth of his knowledge was incredible, but what made the tour unforgettable was the way he delivered it. He was hilarious, thoughtful, and deeply aware of the Beatles’ lasting impact on popular culture. Between the stories and laughs, he offered an introspective, intimate, and compassionate view of the world, and of how we should treat one another. That part resonated as much as the music history. We saw the city’s most important and memorable sights in comfort, including Penny Lane, Strawberry Field, the childhood homes of John and Ringo, and the neighborhoods where George and Paul grew up. Along the way, we learned about the Beatles’ relationships, Liverpool’s momentous architecture, and the city’s complex and often tumultuous political history. The route could do with a bit of tree trimming in places, but that is a minor note in what was otherwise an outstanding experience. Joe and Tommy made this far more than a bus tour. They made it a warm, funny, moving, and memorable look at Liverpool, the Beatles, and the spirit of a city that helped change the world.
Not only was this a great tour of Liverpool the guide Tommy was different class. He made the afternoon with wit, music, poetry and poignant commentary. I have told and will continue to tell my friends of the highlight of my five day holiday.
Tommy and Joe fantastic as always
I will be frank with you, the tour is worth it for the show put on by the speaker on the bus who shares various anecdotes about the Beatles, which are, by the way, somewhat clichéd... for the rest, it is frustrating and disappointing. We toured 48 hours before renting a car for the rest of our stay in Wales, and as a result, we took advantage of this vehicle to retrace the steps of the 4. The bus follows a route that is supposed to respect the tranquility of the residents (which is understandable, of course) or is restricted to double-decker bus traffic. It follows that you will pass within 500 m of Ringo S.'s house and will only catch a glimpse of the mural on the house from very far away, the same goes for 20 Forthlin St (Paul McCartney's family home) where you will only see the roof ("look at the red roof," says the guide, as the bus continues on its way ;-) ... On John Lennon's side, the house is located on a 2 x 2 lane avenue, making it impossible to stop even for a second. As for George Harrison, the house where he lived is clearly off the route (25 Upton Grn near the airport) and is therefore not even mentioned ... So to summarize, the bus stops for 5 minutes at a junction of Penny Lane (and not near the historical plaque, by the way), where a selfie session is organized, then in front of the gate of Strawberry Fields (for a second selfie session if another bus is not already in action ... and walking on tiptoes to avoid disturbing the neighbors ...). St Peter's Church, the tomb of Eleanor Rigby, the plaque commemorating the first meeting between Paul and John, the Sgt Pepper bistro, the nearby Imagine statue of John are all purely forgotten ... So to summarize, the tour has an interest in spotting the locations ... period! And it will cost you 25 E for 1.5 hours of unconvincing wandering.
This tour was an excellent way to see all the Beatles sites and city sites in Liverpool. We had a great driver who was professional, friendly, efficient and funny. The exact same can be said for our guide. They made a great trip extra special. Our guide was Jim and our driver was Joe. Thoroughly recommend this tour
