Knossos, hjärtat av den minoiska civilisationen, ligger 5 km sydost om Heraklion, i dalen av floden Kairatos. Kretas mest kända historiska attraktion, platsen anses vara den största arkeologiska platsen från bronsåldern på ön och kallas den äldsta staden i Europa. Knossos beboddes först av en neolitisk bosättning på 700-talet f.Kr. Den förblev bebodd i flera tusen år tills den slutligen övergavs 1375 f.Kr. efter dess förstörelse, vilket markerade slutet på den minoiska civilisationen. År 1878 genomfördes den första storskaliga utgrävningen av den rike konstälskaren Minos Kalokairinos, medan Kreta fortfarande var under turkisk ockupation. Detta följdes av de långvariga utgrävningarna (1900-1913 och 1922-1930) av Sir Arthur Evans, som avslöjade hela det omgivande området Knossos.
Det arkeologiska museet i Heraklion är ett av de största och mest besökta museerna i Grekland. Det är också ett av de viktigaste museerna i Europa. Det är hem för artefakter från alla perioder av kretensiska förhistoria och historia. Utställningarna täcker ett kronologiskt spann på över 5 500 år från yngre stenåldern till romartiden. Arkeologiska museet ligger i centrala Heraklion och byggdes mellan 1937 och 1940 av arkitekten Patroklos Karantinos. Det byggdes på en plats som tidigare ockuperats av det romersk-katolska klostret Saint-Francis som förstördes av jordbävningen 1856. Färgerna och konstruktionsmaterialen som används i byggnaden liknar vissa minoiska väggmålningar.
Rethymno ligger på Kretas norra kust ungefär mitt mellan de två stora städerna Chania (58 km västerut) och Heraklion (79 km österut). Det är den enda staden på ön, som är byggd på en udde. We had an amazing private tour to Knossos Palace from Chania, and it was one of the best experiences of our trip to Crete. Christine was a fantastic guide! She is very knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about the history of Knossos and Crete. We learned so much and never felt rushed, and she was happy to answer all of our questions. Our driver Thanos was incredibly kind, professional, and made the long drive comfortable and stress-free. We felt well taken care of from the moment we were picked up until we returned to Chania. If you're thinking about visiting Knossos from Chania, I highly recommend this private tour. Having Christine and Thanos made all the difference! They were a wonderful team, and they helped make our day truly memorable. We would definitely do it again!

I highly recommend a tour with Thanos and Christine. We learned so much about Crete culture and history and Minoan civilization. Booked this private bus tour for my family and it was simply amazing. The driver and guide, Thanos and Christine, were very kind, polite and friendly. They took care of us all day and made sure We were comfortable the entire trip. The tour allowed us to see the ruins of Knossos, Museum, town of Rethymno and a local Oil factory. Christine & her team blew this tour out of the park for us! We enjoyed learning all about Chania & Crete. The private tour through Knossos was a huge plus & enjoyable, I’m glad we set up the agenda to go there before the museum because the history was so helpful! We opted to go on an olive oil mill tour and it was so interesting to taste & learn more about the process! This team was so easy & flexible to work with and after the tour Christine gave us delicious local spots near our hotel to try. If we visit Chania again, we will be using SeaByBus again!

Our private tour to Knossos was one of the highlights of our trip. Hiring a private guide was absolutely worth it! They brought the history to life with fascinating stories and insights that we never would have gotten on our own. The experience exceeded all of our expectations, and we left with a much deeper appreciation for the site. We also visited Elafonisi Beach with a different tour company. Palace of Knossos private tour was fantastic. Our wonderful driver picked us up from the boat port and took us to the site. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and fantastic.
