Absolutely loved this experience with my teen daughters we dressed up in kimonos and had our hair done, the women helping us were so sweet and really became part of the experience. The tea ceremony was beautiful and our host was the epitome of peace and kindness. From now on every sip of matcha has a deeper meaning. We also were able to take photos dressed up in the tea house. This was a Kyoto must do.
Great experience. Everyone was super nice and friendly. Learned a lot about the meaning behind tea ceremonies in Japan from Yuki. It was a bonus that we got to wear our kimonos and walk through Gion wearing them for a few hours.
Our family of four decided to experience a tea ceremony. Smart decision. All four of us, two men and two women, were outfitted with appropriate kimonos, undergarments, tabi shoes and socks, and obis. The ladies had their hair done in traditional Japanese styles. We were taken upstairs where we met Mariko. Mariko explained the significance and process of a ritual tea ceremony. Following eating something sweet to enhance the flavor of the matcha tea, Mariko taught us how to properly make our own cups of tea. It was a great time had by all. Even my often impatient teens were really into it. All in all, we truly enjoyed ourselves and I heartily recommend this activity. I must point out that everyone was an absolute delight. There was a young man who I discovered shares my passion for music. He was very helpful explaining things before and after the ceremony. The young lady who assisted my son and me with selecting our outfit was very patient and a pure delight. I’m sure the same was true for the lady who assisted my wife and daughter. Of course, Mariko was the star, and she was great. I know I have missed some others. Everyone was delightful, helpful, professional, and like everyone else in Japan - - very polite and grateful. Go!!!
It was not just an experience but a moment outside of time, far from the modern world. Wearing the kimono was just the first step to truly entering the atmosphere of ancient Japan. Then the scent of tatami, the sound of boiling water, the slow and precise gestures of the teacher, and the taste of matcha did the rest. Upon leaving, I had the feeling of having experienced something authentic!
We’d recommend this experience. We had a great time. Dressed in kimono, an experience in itself, we found the tea ceremony informative. The staff was brilliant.
What an amazing experience my adult daughter and I shared together! We both so enjoyed getting dressed up in the beautiful kimonos, learning about the ancient art of tea-making, and making our own matcha tea with sweet treats. They gave us plenty of time to take pictures after. We felt very “divinely feminine” wearing the kimonos. We both highly recommend this extra special experience in Gion!
This is a great experience, short enough that you can easily fit it in a busy day, along with the fact that you get to choose a kimono to wear, ladies get their hair done up. You even get the socks and sandals they wore. You can get photos in while you wait for the ceremony. At the tea ceremony, they give you a little history, and then explain each part of the ceremony. It's quite fascinating. Then you try a traditional sweet, then you get to stir up your own matcha tea and enjoy.
The experience was great. The location was super easy to find and the women who helped me get dressed in the kimono were so sweet. They took their time to do your hair nice as well and take pictures. The ceremony was great but it is hard to sit on your knees for that long. Do some stretching ahead!
It was such a great experience for us friends to do this tea ceremony wearing the traditional kimono. The stuff is very nice. We got to picked the color of kimonos we want to wear and helped us put them on. They fixed our hair too. They took a lot of our pictures. It was one of the highlight of our trip in Japan.
This was a great experience. It was fun and we met some lovely people. You should include the Kimono option. it adds to the fun. Highly recommended.
