Unfortunately there were several cruise ships in Katakolon the day we went to Olympia which made it very busy and crowded Walk the streets of the Ancient Greeks. Marvel at the Temple of Zeus which in its heyday would have totally dominated this site. There were several people running the original site for the athletics
We were on a cruise, and the port was closed due to bad weather that day. As soon as the captain let us know that we were not permitted to stop in the port, I reached out to the tour guide to inform them of the situation. They didn't respond to the port closure or our request for a refund. Upon our return, I reached out to Viator requesting a refund. It is now 5 weeks later, and we have not received any response.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are truly sorry to hear about the disruption to your cruise and understand how disappointing port closures can be. Unfortunately, when a ship is unable to dock, notifications from guests do not always reach us in real time, and in this case we did not receive any refund request. We encourage you to contact Viator customer support again with your booking reference so they can process the refund, and we remain available to support your request in any way needed from our side.
We choose a small group tour (maximum 25 guests) travelling through the valley countryside between the Alfios and Klados Rivers to Ancient Olympia. Setting out on a walking tour that brings those ancient stories of this city to life, from the ruins of the Temple of Zeus to the stadium where the Olympic Games began. Our guide offered us an insight into the ancient history as we view the ruined Temples of Hera and Zeus. The latter is where the gold and ivory Statue of the Olympian Zeus -- one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World -- was housed. We walked to the stadium, where the marble starting blocks are still in position after nearly 1,500 years. We were told that In 2004, this ancient site relived its glory days for just a moment when the modern Olympics shotput contest was held here. When we left the Olympia site we continued to the Archaeological Museum, just a short walk from the stadium. On display are treasures unearthed by more than a century of excavation. We saw parts of the pediment from the Temple of Zeus, including scenes commemorating Pelops' chariot race. We also visited the Ancient Olympic Games Museum, set in a beautiful neo-Classical building overlooking Olympia. Here we learnt about the different events the ancient athletes competed in and view archaeological finds from Olympia -- site of the games for more than a millennium. Following this we were treated to a Greek lunch in a local restaurant overlooking the Olympia site. For those thinking of this excursion. Extensive walking is required. Terrain includes gravel and uneven paths. Shade is limited and bring water.
This was a great experience. Nancy was our guide. She was fantastic! Olympia was great, the temperature was hot but seeing all that history was worth it! Would recommend buying tickets to Olympia ahead just check with you tour operator to get the right time slot and try to do outside first, then go to the museum to cool off. The beach was nice and Nancy had reserved some umbrellas and chairs. We recommend ordering drinks before you go down to the beach if you want some. Only one or two people running them so we did not get any during our short time there. The van they had was great for 11 and the AC was wonderful. We got some local green soap as recommended by our guide. Would recommend!
Just an amazing place with so much history. The excavations have revealed so much wonder, the stadia is almost intact and our tour guide was very knowledgeable
We arrived at the port by MSC ship, we went to the taxi area where we were greeted by Andrew Stathopoulos a very good and very kind taxi driver who also advised us what to do, where to eat and what to eat. Helpful and very knowledgeable about many things also of other Greek islands. A beautiful experience to redo!!
Great driver and guide. They gave us great recommendations for food and things to do for our day. We did Olympia the museum, lunch and an amazing beach!
The tour didn't get off to a very good start. We had arranged for a winery visit and were told we would be going to a bee farm (not happening). There were added costs that we weren't made aware off. When we got the winery we were booked in for a taster and were not given the option for lunch, despite our guide having the lunch. However, one can't deny the beauty that Katakolon had to offer.
The Olympic ruins were beyond amazing. To walk through and imagine what used to be thousands of years ago is an incredible site. Walking through the museum was a great connection between the ruins and artifacts. Kilo Honey Farm was a lovely treat. The farm is run by the sweetest mother-daughter duo. They welcomed us into their home and treated us to some delicious treats! Our guide, Nasia, was very accommodating, sweet and informative!!
The start of the tour was great. We left early at 8am and got to Olympia before the crowd's got there. After we went to a great little honey bee farm and tasted some of the products they make, I recommend doing that. The lady was great that owns the farm. After that we went to a beautiful gorgeous resort place by the ocean that had a little beach and had food/drinks.
