Fantastic museum stop in Key West! Stopped in on April 14th & spent about 1 1/2 hours exploring the treasures found by Mel Fisher & his family & coworkers. Gold, silver, everyday objects… it took them years! Also a comprehensive & thoughtful exhibition on the slave trade upstairs. Very sad. I learned some new facts…
Very interesting and almost unbelievable that booty like this could be found. Cool respite from the heat.
I hadn’t been here in years and was amazed at how much more was added to the museum and how wonderful it is to hear and see the history of the Atoche and the bounty that came from the shipwreck
Mel Fisher has a fascinating story. This museum is about his diving experiences and finding the treasures of the Atocha. It was a part of a Spanish Fleet returning home after plundering Central and South America with todays equivalent of over $1 billion in treasure.. The artifacts and story are very interesting. Having worked in museums as a career, I can highly recommend this museum. Everything is clearly explained, without too much text. The presentation is exceptionally crafted. The videos are well placed, and not too long. Everything is clean and tidy.
Interesting museum on Mel Fisher and wreck salvaging in general. Learned a lot about sea trade in early America ... eye opening. Worth a visit.
If you have any interest in pirates, or black history, this museum covers both thoroughly. The descriptions of slave trade were very emotional.
Fantastic experience, learning about the miraculous discovery of the sunken Atocha!! There are wonderful displays of coins, etc. found in the wreckage . DO NOT miss the short film at the beginning!! We Loved it !!
The Mel Fisher Museum was really interesting. They had tons of artifacts that were recovered from shipwrecks, and the displays explained in detail how everything was discovered. What stuck with me the most was how much they went into the history of the slave trade, it was heavy but really eye-opening. Overall, super detailed and definitely worth the visit.
Enjoyed learning about the Fisher adventure and the gold and silver trade in the Americas. Pricey entrance fee! Terrific groups of treasure artifacts from the Atocha.
I wish I went here with more time. I planned this museum for the day I flew out so time was limited. Great story of an individual, a family and how they have found so much history! The exhibits were well-laid out and had great explanations. The treasures on display were gorgeous and somehow felt intimate (I don’t know how to explain). If you want to see history, science, jewels and a story of personal endurance this is the place to go.
