Colombo är den mest kända i Sri Lanka. Den byggdes för drygt 120 år sedan och är tillägnad buddhismen. Templet hyllas för sin påkostade arkitektur och statyer som visar lankesiska, kinesiska, thailändska, burmesiska och andra konstnärliga stilar.
Dess arkitektur är indo-saracenisk, med granatäppleformade kupoler. Men den mest extraordinära egenskapen är att varje tegelsten är målad röd eller vit och används i kontrasterande mönster.(Photo Stop)
Viharamahadevi Park eller formellt känd som Victoria Park är den största, äldsta och mest färgstarka parken som ligger i hjärtat av Colombo. Det är en perfekt plats att koppla av, för skuggiga promenader, picknick och framför allt ett bra ställe att tillbringa din tid med din familj.
Independence Square ligger i det prestigefyllda Cinnamon Gardens-distriktet i Colombo, Sri Lanka. Den har fått sitt namn från Independence Memorial Hall som byggdes där för att fira Sri Lankas självständighet från brittiskt styre 1948. Nära torget ligger Arcade, ett modernt köpcentrum inrymt i tidigare koloniala regeringsbyggnader.
Pettah är ett av de äldsta distrikten i Colombo. Det är den mest etniskt blandade platsen i landet. Stora religiösa byggnader representerar en uppsjö av trosriktningar, medan mer jordiska sysslor kan hittas i marknadsstånd och butiker. Folkmassorna i Pettah kan bli överväldigande under morgon- och eftermiddagsrusningstiderna.
Järnvägslinjen startades för över 150 år sedan av britterna. Den gamla Fort-regionen i Colombo är en av de mest trafikerade områdena i staden. 1877 skapades Kustjärnvägsbanan och det var då den första stationen invigdes. Vid den tiden låg Central Terminus på en plats nära Maradana. Platsen kan fortfarande ses eftersom den nu fungerar som Sri Lankas järnvägsmuseum.
Sankt Antonius kyrka är ett monument över kärlek och hängivenhet till Sankt Antonius, uppvuxet av alla, rika och fattiga, i Colombo, såväl som i hela Ceylon. Må Anthony skydda denna stad och denna ö och alla hans fromma är och älskare däri.
Sri Ponnambala-waneswaram-templet är ett av Sri Lankas finaste exempel på dravidisk arkitektur. Detta tempel i Kotahena, nordost om Pettah, är byggt av sydindisk granit. Den är tillägnad den hinduiska guden Shiva; även om det inte är för gammalt, är det fortfarande ett makalöst exempel på gammal Dravidansk arkitektur.
Den nya byggnaden för sekretariatet, rådssalen och regeringskontoren kommer att stå färdig i Colombo senare i år. Den kommer att ersätta den nuvarande byggnaden, som byggdes under den brittiska kolonialtiden.
Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall är ett av de främsta kongresscentren som finns på ön. BMICH har över 16 000 kvadratmeter golvyta. Byggandet av detta kongresscenter var ett gemensamt projekt mellan lankesiska och kinesiska arbetare.
Sri Lanka köper konst för att pryda sina hem, hotell, kontor och som presenter. Gatuhantverkare från Nelum Pokuna har bidragit med sin kraft till denna strävan. För turister att ta med sig hem är en målning som föreställer ett lokalt tema det bästa minnet.
Fyren är en av de få fyrarna från kolonialtiden som fortfarande är i drift fram till idag. D:et i fyren beställdes så att arbetare i det området av Colombo kan vara mer punktliga eftersom personliga klockor inte hade råd med alla förr i tiden.
Tornet byggdes i början av 1900-talet av en Parsi-familj (som kommer från Bombay) med namnet Khan. Det fyra våningar höga tornet står kvar till denna dag i en anlagd rondell. Vattenfontänen som är fäst vid den har länge slutat fungera, men klocktornet fortsätter att fungera.
Templet Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil är en av Sri Lankas vackraste och vackraste attraktionsplatser. Det finns många vackra och eleganta målningar av Gud och gudinna. It was booked last minute and was a good insight of Colombo. Managed to see quite a bit by driving around and also stopping off at places. Some of the places of worship have set visiting times so be mindful of that. Easy to contact via WhatsApp.
Driver was not very engaged and didn’t give us much commentary. We did see as much as we wanted to see but didn’t enjoy our driver
The tour was efficient in terms of time used. My guide was courteous, helpful and knowledgeable about the city and its history. It was time well spent, about two hours with little time wasted

We saw a lot of Colombo in a few hours in a late model mini bus with air con. Driver was very good and with good English. However at end it was a bit difficult to get to any markets for shopping so we just visited one Brand shop as a friend wanted Ceylon Tea. All in all great value. They met us at the ship. Dropped us off at Port gate on return and we took shuttle buses from there to the ship The hlghlight was the Buddhist temple and also Colombo was very very tidy and all be it a lot of old infrastructure littering was not evident. We did it our own. It was a 6 nights and 7 days family tour of Sri Lanka. We were 5 (4 adults and 1 baby<2). Airport to airport taxi for the whole journey was amazing! The spacious taxi was full of comfort and convenience. It was dedicated to us 24x7 with an English speaking guide cum driver! We covered Colombo, Trincomalee, Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Elia, Ella, Yala, Bentota with comfortable stay at different places managed by our own. The guide facilitated us with best of Indian food at various places of stay. The beaches, the mountains, the places of religious importance and the visit of Yala National Park were superb.

I guess I was expecting a tour with a guide who explained the history of Colombo. I had a driver who pointed out buildings, many which had the use on a sign. I visited an interesting temple but the driver didn’t compute to explain the significance so I am still unaware of its significance. Visiting a park was of little value when the explanation was this is where families come on the weekends. The three hour “tour” was completed in under two hours including the late arrival of the driver. I noted that other tourists had their guide explaining the places where we stopped. It was poor value for what I received.

Hi Viator, now we are back from our vacation in Sri Lanka, I can write about our Half Day City Tour experience in Colombo on 8/12/2023 in the afternoon. The “tour guide” is not a professional tour guide at all. He did come to pick us up at the hotel at 2:30pm, he basically ended up driving us around to a few tourist spots and that’s it. We each paid $30 (total of $60), which is a lot of money in Sri Lanka, but we got no tour in terms of explanation of the sites or culture or history at all. His English was terrible, when he dropped us off at a site, he left us alone and then he talked on his cell phone. At one point he drove us to a big souvenir shop as a tour site and I had to told him that we did not want to shop, we wanted city site-seeing and a tour. He did not deliver the tour at all, he just drove us to sites and that’s it. At one point, he even drove to a car repair shop and had a mechanic to look at one of his tires. He also talked on his cell phone while he was driving. The whole half day city tour was ridiculous. We have done many Viator programs in various cities and countries, this one does not live up to the Viator standards at all. We suggest that you stop using that tour company period!!!
Apple Vacations went the extra mile to ensure I saw everything I wanted to of Colombo. My guide was very friendly and knowledgeable of all the sights. Overall, a great tour worth the money - especially for those travelling solo (I felt comfortable the entire time). Would recommend to anyone, travelling solo or in a group!
