Beskrivning

This tour was a delightful way to see some of the city while learning about how what we experience today came to be. Daria was a very well spoken and knowledgeable guide, and the tour wove together elements of history, architecture, and social issues, complete with a variety of visual aides and artifacts like preserved trade cards that the department stores originally provided to their customers. As someone who lives in NYC, it was an excellent tour to better understand the origin of a variety of buildings I often walk by, and how the dry goods trade shifted over time and shaped the city, eventually evolving into what we understand department stores as today. I'd highly recommend Daria and the Gilded Age NYC Shopping Palaces Walking Tour to anyone with a passing interest in NYC, architecture, or how businesses, economies, and social issues interact to influence each other and evolve.
Daria's tour is well researched and her enthusiasm for the Gilded Age is genuinely infectious. She brought original artifacts that made the history feel like a real time capsule. I now find myself looking up at the architecture rather than into the storefronts. Will be recommending to locals and visitors alike!
Daria was an amazing guide and so full of knowledge. The tour gave me a really interesting lens to view the city through. She was so descriptive of what the streets used to look like, and I was able to place myself back in that time. Even though I'm a local who walks this neighborhood often, she pointed out so many buildings and details I never noticed before. Daria did an amazing job highlighting what larger-than-life characters all of these department store owners were, what it was like to be a woman in different social classes during the time, and the evolution of the neighborhood over decades. It really highlighted to me how much we've lost in our neighborhoods and that we need to do a better job of preserving all kinds of architecture. The tour had a healthy group of about fifteen people, and Daria was able to keep us all together and answer the weird questions we asked her. An unexpected treat was the number of real objects from the time that Daria passed around - old advertisements, calling cards, and even order sheets. She was able to show us all large photos of what the area looked like at the time or specific buildings in their unaltered state, and it really helped me connect with a sense of what the spaces would have felt like at the time. An incredible value for the time and information you get. A unique way to view the neighborhood. I think this would be best for people looking to learn something new about their own city, people obsessed with the Gilded Age, and anyone just looking for unique history and personalities. Highly recommend!
Great 2 hour tour. Looking at architecture and hearing gilded age stories.
