june visit and guided tour

A fascinating and important park that helped in our understanding of Hungarian history. Our guide, Barbara was knowledgeable, and thoughtful of our needs, givingus umbrellas on an incredibly hot day. would recommend a guided tour

Fascinating insights into communist Hungary

This is a fascinating place. The sculptures and statues are as monolithic and impressive as one could wish. There isn’t any written explanation for the statues so taking a tour is essential to understand what you are looking at. Our guide, Barbara, was knowledgeable and entertaining. She brought the whole communist era in Hungary to life. Be warned though, there is very little shade in the park. Take a proper sun hat and lots of liquid (drinks can be bought at reception).

Excellent tour of Memento Park

Really good tour of the park by very knowledgeable guide - great to hear about the architectural layout of the park setting the scene for the statues, the historic context for each statue and excellent to be able to see the photos from the guide of where the statues were originally placed.

Well worth a visit!

Getting to this place by bus was not for the novice! But my visit was fantastic. Borbara was a fantastic guide, sharing personal experiences from her own life and great context for the statues. I'm so glad I made the effort to get there.

Original and highly recommended!

An important reminder of history in an original setting, I highly recommend a visit to Memento Park, especially with a guided tour, which is completely worth the money and the trip out to the park (50 minutes by public transport). Barbara’s tour was well-structured and thorough, and she encouraged me to ask questions. Invaluably, she lived in Budapest during the communist times and therefore was able to give genuine insight into what life was like. I’d encourage everyone who’s taking a trip to Budapest to include this in your itinerary!

Fascinating stories behind the statues

Fascinating guided tour with insights into the history of Hungary. Without our guide we would never have known all of the stories behind the statues.

A dive into the Communist era in Hungary

Guided tours are, in my opinion, essential to enjoy this place to the fullest and to grasp its richness. We had a visit in English with our guide, Borbála, who knew how to share with passion and precision his memories of youth in Hungary. In particular, it has enlightened us about the conditions of life under the Communist regime and the omnipresence of propaganda in all aspects of daily life. Monumental statues, once scattered throughout Budapest before 1991, take on a whole new dimension. The museum also offers the screening of training films for Hungarian intelligence agents, used to track down “traitors”: rare, fascinating and particularly immersive documents. Beyond the historical aspect, the impressive statues as well as the Trabant exhibited at the entrance are worth a visit!

Left feeling much more knowledgeable on Hungarian history.

Ilda was the best guide! very informative on every detail we asked, Would have missed out on so much fascinating history if we had not had the guided tour with such an excellent guide. Ilda told us about her own experiences, Hungarian history and the context of the monuments. Along with making the backgrounds of the monuments much more understandable, Ilda's personal stories made the information much more real and alive.

Zoltan (excellent guided visit)

“There was once an era which expressed itself through these threatening symbols” (G.Boros). Having “liberated” Hungary, the authorities glorified the communist ideal and its representatives. Memento Park is well worth a guided visit (buy a written guide, at the very least). Seven of us paid for a private tour on a Wednesday (it cost us about £14 per head, including entry). Zoltan is an excellent guide. There were plenty of laughs for such a serious, historical subject. As a child, Zoltan was a member of the Communists’ Pioneer Association. He remembers one of the statues from his home district. His grandfather was forced to work in a foreign mine. It was easy and economical to reach Memento Park. We used a Bolt taxi.
